Volunteers Invited to Collect Native Seeds in October

The Department of Natural Resources is seeking volunteers to harvest native prairie seeds at 10 state parks and recreation areas during October weekends.

The seeds will be used to restore tallgrass prairie, lakeplain prairie, oak savanna and dune ecosystems throughout southern Michigan.

The prairie and oak savanna ecosystems, nearly eliminated during European settlement, exist today in small remnants in many Michiganís state parks and recreation areas. Seed collection is a key step in restoring these lost landscapes, but a step that requires many hands
