Youth Sports: Yet Another Thing Violence Doesn't Go With The Detroit News takes a hard look at how out-of-control parents or fans are making things difficult and dangerous for youth sports coaches and officials. A survey by SportingKid magazine of over 3300 parents found that 84% had witnessed violent parental behavior (shouting, berating, abusive language) toward children, team coaches or officials. Another by Sports Illustrated's S.I. for Kids found that 74% of youths who responded said they had seen out-of-control adults at their games. In addition to drinking (involved in two of the three Michigan incidents, unrealisticly high expectations, stress and excitement are cited as causes.
