Alternative Energy Drawing Attention of Legislature

The Traverse City Record-Eagle has an AP feature that looks at the raft of alternative energy bills and related measures that have been introduced in recent weeks. Highlights include:
  • A bill that would establish a commission to study alternative fuels, particularly those with agricultural roots.

  • The Senate Technology and Energy Committee has formed a work group drawing members from utilities, universities, public interest research groups and others to explore long-range planning.

  • Bills aimed at capitalizing on Michigan's status as one of the nation's windiest states and offering tax credits to businesses if they own and operate small wind turbines.

  • A bill to require the Michigan Department of Transportation to help develop a "hydrogen highway" with fueling stations on certain roads.

  • Bills to offer loans to farmers for agricultural energy production, tax incentives to gasoline dealers who offer biodiesel or ethanol fuels, and to require fuel products in Michigan to have 5% biodiesel content and gasoline to have 10% ethanol content.
