Alternative Energy Drawing Attention of Legislature

The Traverse City Record-Eagle has an AP feature that looks at the raft of alternative energy bills and related measures that have been introduced in recent weeks. Highlights include:

A bill that would establish a commission to study alternative fuels, particularly those with agricultural roots.

The Senate Technology and Energy Committee has formed a work group drawing members from utilities, universities, public interest research groups and others to explore long-range planning.

Bills aimed at capitalizing on Michigan's status as one of the nation's windiest states and offering tax credits to businesses if they own and operate small wind turbines.

A bill to require the Michigan Department of Transportation to help develop a "hydrogen highway" with fueling stations on certain roads.

Bills to offer loans to farmers for agricultural energy production, tax incentives to gasoline dealers who offer biodiesel or ethanol fuels, and to require fuel products in Michigan to have 5% biodiesel content and gasoline to have 10% ethanol content.
