Stupak Introduces Federal Sulfide Mining BillThe Mining Journal reports that Rep. Bart Stupak has introduced a bill intended to protect the water quality of the Great Lakes from acid mine drainage. If approved, it would require that no federal permit may be issued to operate a sulfide mine within 5 miles of any of the Great Lakes unless the applicant can demonstrate there will be no acid mine drainage as a result of the operation. Stupak said the bill was not a specific response to plans by Kennecott Minerals to develop a sulfide mining operation north of Marquette, noting that a different company has proposed a similar mine in Menominee County, near the Menominee River."If youíre going to have this new type mining in Michigan, letís make sure we do it right," Stupak said this morning. "Iím not opposed to it, I just want to make sure we do it right. This is a whole new approach weíre taking." Read Stupak pushing mine bill in the Mining Journal click to
