The Past & Future of Michigan Tourism The Traverse City Record-Eagle has a pair of articles recapping this week's Michigan Lodging & Tourism Conference presented by the state and the Michigan Hotel, Motel & Resort Association. George Zimmerman, vice president of Travel Michigan, said the state plans to increase tourism spending by $3 million this year (to nearly $9 million) and add $6 million to the 2007 and 2008 tourism budgets. They plan to expand regional tourism advertising in southern Ohio, Wisconsin and Ontario. Regarding 2005 tourism, research presented by MSU's Tourism Resource Center found that while travel volume fell by about 2% last year, tourism spending increased around 4%.
