Michigan Mushroom FestivalsThe elusive morel mushrooms attract shroomers of all ages who enjoy the camaraderie and thrill of the hunt through the woods in search of the delicacy. Michigan boasts two major events with plenty of fun for the whole family. Just don't expect everyone to share their secret morel locations. The tiny town of Mesick, about 20 miles south of Traverse City, will swell with morel fans May 12-14 for the annual Mesick Mushroom Festival. In addition to a mushroom contest expect a Giant Flea Market, carnival, horse pull, arts & craft show, pasty sale, fish dinner, 5krun/walk, softball and volleyball tournaments and Grand Parade. At the 46th Annual Morel Mushroom Festival in Boyne City, May 18-20, you can learn about the delicacy at a morel seminar, then join a guided mushroom hunt in preparation for the competitive event that follows the Morel Breakfast. Rounding out the weekend are the Farmer's Market, carnival, craft show, disc golf and softball tournaments and the Morel Challenge, a race between cars made of fruits or vegetables. A delicious highlight is the sampling of specialties from area chefs at the Taste of Boyne. Mesick Mushroom Festival web site click to
