Solar Power in MichiganThe Detroit Free Press continues its excellent series on alternative energy with a look at solar power. They say that while not as exotic (or heavily hyped) as technologies like hydrogen fuel cells, solar power is perhaps the most understood and accessible alternative energy discussed today. Critics of solar power say that without subsidies, solar is too expensive to be cost-competitive with power generated from coal and natural gas in Michigan, but environmentalists counter that Michigan receives 5.5 kilowatt-hours of sunlight a day, which is the average for the 50 states. The solar industry, composed of solar, solar-thermal and photovoltaic manufacturing, is expected to increase nearly fivefold to more than $51 billion by 2015. The Freep's article profiles a number of Michigan companies working on various aspects of the solar industry in Michigan including solar, solar-thermal and photovoltaic manufacturing, solar heaters and solar array installation.
