Dads Weekend

Ernie Harwell and Alan Trammell Go to Bat for Michigan Public Libraries

The Library of Michigan today announced that Sunday, May 21, has been designated as the second annual Michigan Public Libraries Day at Comerica Park. The Ernie and Tram Go to Bat for Michigan Public Libraries program encourages public library supporters to attend the May 21st game and see the Detroit Tigers play the Cincinnati Reds. Nine dollars from every $20 ticket sold by libraries will be used to create endowments at public libraries in Michigan.

Two local authors and baseball historians have written books that provide unique insights into the game

While compiling research for his book "The Detroit Tigers: A Pictorial Celebrationî, William M. Anderson, director of the stateís Department of History Arts and Libraries learned that former Tiger's manager Red Rolfe kept a journal during his three and one-half seasons (1949-52) as Tiger manager. After initial contact with Rolfe's family he was told that they knew nothing of the journal. Years past before a call came from a nephew stating that Rolfeís wife had died and a journal had been found. The journal is totally uncensored and was meant only for Rolfe. Now we can all catch a glimpse into this facinating document by reading ìThe View from the Dugout: The Journals of Red Rolfe.î

Peter Morrisí ìA Game of Inchesî is the insiderís-insider book about the arcane history of the national pastime. Morris, author of ìBaseball Fever,î has put all you would ever want to know about baseball in 500 pages and 1,000 entries, from the evolution of the catcherís mask to why there are nine players, nine innings, four balls and ìthree strikes, youíre out.î
