China's Henry Ford Shanghai, China, March 2006 by Brian Jeffery Beggerly New Zealand Autocar has an interesting feature about 43-year-old Li Shufu, head of China's largest independent car producer, Geely. Mr. Li was a photographer who started making refrigerator parts, then motorcycles and finally cars. Now Geely Automobiles produces 200,000 cars a year in 14 different models, including China's first sports car. Asked about whether China and Geely have what it takes to succeed internationally, Li responds "Car technology is more open and mature than before. Talent is more mobile than before. Car manufacturing equipment is easier to access than before. Compared with 50 years ago, car technology development is easier than before."
