Dual Committee Created to Address SBTThe Detroit Free Press reports that yesterday Republican lawmakers announced a special House-Senate committee to recommend a replacement for the state's Single Business Tax by Dec. 1. It appears likely that the SBT, which adds nearly $2 billion annually to the state budget, will be repealed as a result of a sucessful petition drive. Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson (who spearheaded the drive) has said any replacement tax should result in a net tax cut of up to $500 million for businesses statewide. "That's the kind of tax cut this state needs to jump-start the economy. It's going to take a dramatic move."Senate Minority Leader Bob Emerson, D-Flint, called the special joint committee a political tactic to deflect criticism, stating "I think they're looking at a way to provide cover for the fact they're doing away with $2 billion in revenue with no plan to replace it."
