Magistrate Against Au Sable Drilling

Au Sable River by Naoko M

The Detroit News reports that US magistrate judge Charles Binder has recommended halting plans to allow oil and gas drilling inside an environmentally sensitive area of the Huron-Manistee National Forest near Grayling and has sharply criticized two federal agencies for giving the plan a go-ahead. The plan would allow oil and gas drilling within 800 feet of the 4,700-acre Mason Tract, an area along the south branch of the AuSable River that was donated to the state in the 1950s by George W. Mason.

The Au Sable draws fly fishing enthusiasts from around the world and the proposed site is inside the protected management areas for the Kirtland's warbler, a federally designated endangered species, and the bald eagle, a threatened species.
