Group Seeks Equity in Michigan School FundingThe Traverse City Record-Eagle has a report on Citizens for Equity, a group of parents, educators and concerned residents from northern Michigan communities who want changes in the state's education funding system. Many school districts in the region such as Kingsley and Traverse City Area Public Schools receive the bare minimum per-pupil state grant of $6,875 while tweaks to Proposal A such as Section 20j grant many more dollars to the state's wealthiest districts. From the group's web site:For example, during 2004/2005, three intermediate school districts (Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne) received a total of $693,923,893.00 in supplemental funding from the state, while 20 districts (Barry, Branch, Clare-Gladwin, Coor, Dickinson-Iron, Hillsdale, Ionia, Iosco, Lapeer, Lewis Cass, Mecosta-Osceola, Menominee, Montcalm Area, Newaygo County, Oceana, Sanilac, Shiawassee, St. Joseph, Tuscola and Wexford-Missaukee) received absolutely nothing.
