Michigan is awash in natural beauty and surrounded by crystal clear lakes. These lakes help produce some of the best wine in the country. Michigan's sandy soil and lake-dominated climate allow longer growing seasons, which in turn produce more grapes. Today there are more than 13,500 acres of vineyards, 1,500 of which produce only wine grapes. These acres house 45 wineries which produce 300,000 cases of wine per year. 51% of Michigan's wine grapes grow in the Leelanau Peninsula and the Old Mission Peninsula while another 45% of are grown along the southwest Michigan shoreline and in Fennville. The wine and wine tourism industry is estimated at bring in $100 million. This industry attracts more than 700,000 visitors annually. There are many ways to visit these wineries. Some well known wine trails include Southeast Michigan Pioneer Wine Trail, the Southwest Michigan Wine Trail, the Wineries of Old Mission Peninsula, the Leelanau Peninsula Vintners. Other wineries can be viewed just by stoping in. Wineries are listed below by region.
