Michigan Wine Industry Comes of Age

Leelanau Vineyard by Andrew McFarlane

1 million people visited Michigan's 45 wineries last year, generating an economic impact estimated at more than $100 million. Michigan ranks 8th nationwide in wine grape production and has over 1,500 acres of vineyards. Advances in the vineyards and cellars have allowed Michigan to define its own style of Riesling, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir.

Mitch Irwin, director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture says "In just 10 years, Michigan's wine industry has doubled in size. It plays an important role in diversifying our economy and supporting local growth. And now, with a sharper focus on boosting agricultural tourism, we're certain to accelerate the development of this key industry."
