Michigan's Taxes: More Unbalanced than HighThe MLUI reports that the independent Citizens Research Council of Michigan (CRCM) compared Michigan's taxation and revenue sources to national averages and found that (ontrary to some politicians claims) Michigan is far from a tax-gouging state. When CRCM compared all 50 states, Michigan ranked 36th on individual income taxes, 29th for general sales taxes, 42nd for motor fuel taxes and 41st for selective sales taxes. In all, revenues from selective sales taxes in Michigan were 20% below the US average.Where Michigan does tax heavily is property taxes. The report found that Michigan's per capita property tax burden was around 10% above the U.S. average. Where other states authorize their local governments to levy local-option sales, income, motor fuel, or payroll taxes, local governments in Michigan rely on state aid and property taxes.
