Resources Trust Fund Celebrates 30 Years

Upper Falls by Joel Dinda

Yesterday the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund celebrated its 30th anniversary at Hull Park in Traverse City, one of more than 1,200 state and local recreation projects funded by the trust. Gov. William Milliken signed legislation establishing the fund in 1976. It is funded by revenues from the development of state-owned mineral, oil and gas resources and provides matching grants to local governments and state agencies for land acquisition, public outdoor recreation projects and recreation facility development.

At the ceremony, Gov. Granholm pledged that the trust fund will prioritize funding to help connect the state's trail systems by 2009. Celebrations will also be held in Farmington Hills (Aug 8) and at the UP State Fair (Aug 18).
