The popular ìTaste Ofî Festivals give visitors a chance to savor both Although the fishing on Lake Michigan is considered more ìsportî than ìfeast,î Grand Haven has created its own festival to pay tribute to the areaís bountiful waterways as a natural resource, while coinciding with the regionís annual Salmon migration. The Grand Haven Salmon Festival (September 15 ñ 16) is a two- day festival full of family fun for everyone. Enjoy a wine tasting and salmon cook-off, fresh catch fish boil, fishing tournament, kidís games, educational and environmental exhibits, grape stomping, fall harvest beer tent and much more. While local specialties can be great for visitors, what if you happen to be the local and want to experience flavors from other places ñ perhaps other countries? Taste your way around the world in West Michigan at the Kalamazoo Scottish Festival (August 28) on the Kalamazoo County Fairgrounds. This annual event features traditional dancing, entertainment, re-enactments, and food specialties. Downtown Lansing will sound, taste and feel like the Caribbean at a celebration of music, culture and food during the Caribbean Festival (August 26). In the mood for BBQ? Youíll be the judge as national and local rib vendors compete in rib and sauce cook-offs during Ribfest in Kalamazoo (August 3-5). These ribs will set mouths on fire, but great beers from local brewers will cool them down. Thereís plenty to do besides tasting ribs, including talent contests, musical performances, childrenís tent, entertainment, and rib cooking demonstrations ñ all at Arcadia Creek Festival Place, downtown Kalamazoo. The Silver Lake Sand Dunes Apple Festival & BBQ Cook Off (September 15 - 16) will also tempt sauce enthusiasts during the signature event ñ the Kansas City BBQ Society Cook Off State Competition, where participants will compete for the title of ìBest BBQ on the Western Michigan Shoreline.î And for anyone willing to sacrifice his or her pride for a face-full of sauce, there will be a Rib Eating Challenge on Friday.
