Maryann Mahaffey | 1925 - 2006

The Detroit News & Free Press have a number of articles looking back on the life of Detroit politician Maryann Mahaffey who passed away yesterday at the age of 81. Mahaffey was elected to the Detroit City Council in 1973 and served for 31 years.

Jack Lessenberry shares some personal recollections:

...she wasn't a sappy, fuzzy-headed liberal, as conservatives and The Detroit News editorial page sometimes tried to portray her.

She was ó this is important ó very, very smart. She had a huge heart, but was also a tough bird, analytical as the dickens.

You don't run away; you fight to make your city better, she believed. I don't think any part of that came out of any misguided martyr complex.
