400 Million Tons of IronThe Mining Journal reports that the 94-year-old ore dock in Marquette's Upper Harbor loaded its 400 millionth ton of iron ore on Saturday into the freighter Michipicoten. The 400-million-ton total includes both the direct shipping lump ores that were mined on the Marquette Iron Range in the earlier years of mining and iron ore pellets, which have been produced in Michigan since 1956.Joel writes that the ship in the picture, Elton Hoyt 2nd, is now sailing as the Michipicoten - how cool is that that he added this to our Absolute Michigan photo pool months ago??
