Michigan Utility Costs Inspire Alternative Energy Promises

The LSJ reports that Michigan's utility costs for industrial customers of 5.9 cents per kilowatt hour are higher than surrounding states (5.18 cent average) and slightly above the national average of 5.76 cents. 28% of those polled said utility costs were their most difficult costs to pay (only insurance ranked higher), ahead of taxes, worker's compensation and other items.

Michigan now gets about 55% of its power from coal-burning plants, with the rest mostly from nuclear power plants and gas, and oil-fired power plants. A small amount is from hydroelectric plants and from renewable energy sources such as wind power, something both candidates have pledged to increase.
