The word of the week is lighthouse, and with 116 lighthouses (more than any other state), Michigan could well be known as the Lighthouse State. More lights means more preservation needed, and the Michigan Lighthouse Conservancy and the Michigan Lighthouse Fund both seek to aid in that task.
This week (Oct 11-14) Alpena holds the annual Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival. It's a four day celebration including lighthouse tours (aerial, boat or personal vehicle), entertainment, and vendors. The festival boasts over 100 maritime related vendors including lighthouse preservation groups, artists and authors.
Some great places to explore the beauty and history of Michigan's lighthouses include the lighthouse tag on Michigan in Pictures, Terry Pepper's Seeing the Light, Michigan.org's lighthouse pages and the Michigan Lighthouse Program.
