Michigan State Capitol Building by MichSt
Governor Jennifer M. Granholm delivered her fifth State of the State speech last night. Her speech was highly anticipated by both Democrats and Republicans due to the looming fiscal crisis. Some of the major themes that she touched on included:
- School funding
- Worker Retraining
- Hints about tax increase and budget cuts
- Alternative Energy
- Government Reform
You can read the entire speech at the Governor's website, or watch the whole thing courtesy of Michigan Government TV.
As usual, reaction was mixed and varied across the state. From the right, stop by That's Saul Folks! and Lunchbucket Conservative for their analysis. Moving over to the left, check out Michigan Liberal, and the satirically named Conservative Media as they add their two cents.

Anyone who thinks a modern economy can do without the essential services only government can provide is the kind of a guy who'd buy a brand-new Corvette and try to drive it forever without changing the oil.

I really do agree with this but I think that we have to look at maybe getting something a little cheaper (or a little more sensible) than the Vette. Maybe a nice new Tesla Roadster?
Dear Governor,
Way to go! What a wonderful speech! I am excited by your plans for Michigan's recovery. As a teacher I am thrilled that you are not going to reduce spending this year.
West Michigan Mayors React:
We continue to have to do more with less, but I think we've reached the point where we can't do much more with the less that we're receiving.
