283/366 Say GOOD things about Detroit! by JVLIVS © ®â„¢

While browsing the internet we came across a couple of articles about Detroit that are worth a read over on CNN.com. In light of all the negative news that seems to permeate the national media, these take a look at a cross section of residents and entrepreneurs who love The Big D, The Motor City, Motown, Hockeytown, The-D, The 3-1-3, Rock City and most historical and relevant to Detroit's modern day resurgence The Great Arsenal of Democracy. Whatever you want to call it we call it a city with great history and a bright future.

From CNN.com

Why I love Detroit: 13 stories

Detroit residents always get asked why they stay. 13 locals answer that question - and reveal their favorite treasures of the Motor City.

Detroit entrepreneurs band together

Local business owners are teaming up to draw shoppers and rebuild Detroit, one business at a time.

Tryin' to make these last few days of this 365 as intense as possible. I still say Detroit is home to me, no matter what. There STILL remain some good areas in Detroit that most do NOT know about to this day! Like most of us who are from the 313, I am DETERMINED to prove the naysayers-you know who you are-wrong!

BTW, some of these came various cameras (phones included) that I've used over the course of time (apparently).

Zombie Walk Detroit by Wigwam Jones

If you happen to suddenly find yourself surrounded by hordes of flesh eating zombies don't be alarmed. October 26 is 'World Zombie Day' and around 50 cities including Ferndale and Ann Arbor will be participating in zombie walks. Why you may ask? First of all to have fun but better yet is to help those in need. Zombies as social activists? Thats right, the walks also serve as food drives with participants and spectators being encouraged to bring non-perishable food that will be donated. Food collected from the Ferndale walk will benefit the Ferndale Food Bank and Gleaners and food from the Ann Arbor walk will benefit Food Gatherers a local food bank. Can you feel the zombie love? The third goal to the event is to get into the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest organized walk. Whatever, why not, go for it, def encourages participation...

Michigan State Fair Detroit
The Nation's Oldest State Fair was officially first held in 1849, only twelve years after Michigan attained statehood. At the onset it was customary, in fact, for the fair to be held one year in one city, the next year in another, and there was always a hot contest to be the city selected. The Michigan State Fair settled down at the present fairgrounds in 1905.

Popular attractions include the FREE Concerts under the stars in the Band Shell, daily parades, competitions, horse shows, agricultural displays, arts & crafts, racing pigs, rabbits & poultry, dairy exhibits, carnival midway rides & games and the world's largest stove.

Since our 'Michigan History' article featured the Detroit Zoo today, it made sense (at least to me) that while there you take advantage of another one of Detroit's great attractions. It seems it would be easy to spend an entire day at the Eastern Market and it's surround area, so between the two it could be one heck of a fun weekend. Be sure to pack a cooler so you can take home some of the wonderful bounty at the market!

Detroit Eastern Market is the largest
historic public market district in the United
States.

Every Saturday, Michigan's largest and
most colorful market is host to more than
150 farmers and vendors from Michigan,
Ohio, and Canada offering a cornucopia of
fruits, vegetables, breads, baked goods,
jellies, jams, honey, apple cider, cheeses,
spices, herbs, plants and flowers.

Since 1891, Detroit's Eastern Market has
been home to an amazing community of
farmers, merchants, restaurants, unique
shops, food lovers and residents. On any
given Saturday, more than 26,000
Detroiters, suburbanites and tourists shop
elbow to elbow, sharing experiences from
generation to generation.

Here is an interesting video on the restoration efforts going on within and around the market - via Model D.

Polar bears frolicking in a glass tunnel surrounded by 300,000 gallons of crystal-clear water; kangaroos bouncing about in a simulated Australian Outback; or hundreds of amphibians living in the world's only amphibian conservation center--a place the Wall Street Journal described as "Disneyland for toads." These are some of the experiences visitors can enjoy at the Detroit Zoo.

Celebrating its eightieth anniversary this year, the 125-acre Detroit Zoo is located in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak and draws one million visitors annually. Special events are planned to celebrate this milestone in August.

When established, it was the one of the first zoological parks in the nation to have bar-free animal exhibit areas. Over the years, it has maintained the same location, while preserving some of its architecturally significant buildings and original exhibits.

Visitors will experience a free-flight aviary, featuring exotic hummingbirds and butterflies; eighteen-foot-tall giraffes against a backdrop of ancient Egypt; two 4,000-pound white rhinoceroses hanging out together; a Kenyan native and a former safari guide who roams the African Veldt exhibit area telling children African tales. Add to that bald eagles, camels, prairie dogs, trumpeter swans and even warthogs.

Meanwhile, parents can feel good about the zoo's mission today. According to Ron Kagen, director of the Detroit Zoological Society, which owns the Detroit Zoo, "Years ago, [zoos] were just places of entertainment. Now, they're wonderful sanctuaries for animals. For all of us, the challenge is to make a visit to the zoo something that is wonderfully enriching and healthy for people as well as animals."

Starting June 20th and continuing through the 23rd, Detroit hosts it's annual International River Days, featuring carnival rides, a nautical parade, gigantic fireworks and a wide range of musical performances. River Days is the perfect time to enjoy all the fun that the new Detroit International Riverfront has to offer. Other events include the DTE Parade of Lights, Tall Ship Highlander Sea, Coast Guard Days, Lake Guardian EPA Boat Tours, Diamond Jack's Boat Tours, Detroit River Cruise, Gold Cup Boat Races Exhibitions, Jet Ski demonstrations, the Detroit Open Bass Fishing tournament and much more!

Don't miss the 50th Annual Target Fireworks, on Monday June 23rd along the Detroit International Riverfront. Hundreds of thousands of people line the Riverfront to view one of the nations largest fireworks displays.

It takes 5 days for dozens of specialists to load 3 barges with 250,000 lbs. of fiberglass mortars, 100 miles of wire, 500 tons of sand and more than 10,000 fireworks shells for the annual fireworks display.

International River Days is free to the public.

Wilkommen to Frankenmuth's 50th Annual Bavarian Festival It's not just an event... it's a feeling of "Gemütlichkeit", combined with the warmth and friendship of Michigan's charming Bavarian Village.

It all started in 1959 with a Grand Opening Celebration of the Bavarian style addition to Fischer's Hotel on Main Street. Back then "Tiny" & Dorothy Zehnder gambled on "Bavarianizing" their restaurant and re-naming it Frankenmuth Bavarian Inn. Several years later the event out-grew the parking lots of the restaurants. The Civic Events Council of Frankenmuth took over the operation of what has become an annual Bavarian Festival!

Come and enjoy the Gemütlichkeit of Old Bavaria blended with hospitality of Frankenmuth

Frankenmuth, "Michigan's Little Bavaria", delights over 3 million visitors annually. Come Experience Another World with unique attractions, shopping, restaurants, hotels & camping, festivals, and family fun!
Who was that masked man?
Kee-mo-sah-bee.
Hi-yo, Silver away!

Anyone over the age of fifty in Michigan, or anywhere else for that matter, instantly recognizes these phrases. They are the tried and true marks of one of America's most trusted heroes: the Lone Ranger.

What few people in Michigan know is that The Lone Ranger was a Detroit creation that debuted on WXYZ radio on January 20, 1933-seventy-five years ago. Or that one of the men whose voice rapt listeners heard announcing the show's famous introduction and narration, Fred Foy, is also a Detroit native-and likely the lone survivor among the show's talent.

"It was wonderful for me to be part of that show," said Foy,
eighty-nine, who now lives in Woburn, Massachusetts. Foy became the announcer/narrator in 1948 in Detroit, and remained in that role when the show moved to television in 1949. Foy's broadcasting career eventually earned him induction into the Radio Hall of Fame.

Nearly forty years after the show left television, Foy marvels at the continuing, nostalgic interest in the masked man and his trusty "Indian" companion, Tonto. "I never expected the show to become that much of a legend," he said. "To learn over the years that people listened to it religiously while you were narrating, and then you go to the old radio conventions and they tell you how much the show meant to them-my, it was as if you were a real celebrity."

Fred Foy and the 75th anniversary of The Lone Ranger is the cover story of March/April 2008 issue of Michigan History magazine. For information call (800) 366-3703 or visit www.michiganhistorymagazine.com

Check out the Fred Foy tribute page at the Lone Ranger Fan Club for interviews with Foy and (as an added bonus) when it loads in you hear the whole intro for the show.

Named after former Michigan regent Frederick C. Matthaei, Sr. and his wife Mildred, who donated 200 acres of land, the Matthaei Botanical Gardens are operated by the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Spring is a great time to visit and watch the Gardens come to life. Here is a downloadable Visitor Guide to help you enjoy your time there.

Exploration of the Gardens begins at the Visitor Center where you will find trails which all start and eventually loop back to the building. A visit to the unique Alden B. Dow commissioned Conservatory includes the Tropical House, Warm Temperate House, Bonsai & Penjing Collection and the Arid House.

Besides the beautiful plant life, onsite artwork, both visual and performance is important to the overall experience. The integration of the art with plant life is a interesting way to view the works and take in their messages.

The library and resource center, with over 3,200 cataloged books provides visitors a chance to learn all about plants and the issues surrounding them.

Here is a list of all of the trails, display gardens, natural areas and other exhibits throughout Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum.

You may be interested in their 28th Annual Spring Plant Sale being held May 2-4 or in checking out the calendar of events.

The Huron Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Architects has created podcasts to accompany a walking tour of Ann Arbor. Included is a Matthaei Botanical Gardens podcast. There is also a downloadable 'Ann Arbor Guide to Architecture' which includes a map and description of each entry.

Bucky's Folly by Maia C

Buckminster Fuller, famous for his geodesic domes, sought to solve the post World War II housing crisis by designing a home that would address what he perceived as questionable home construction methods. In turn the factories previously used to manufacture war planes could be kept active. The homes were designed to be energy efficient, low-cost, light weight, easily shipped and assembled onsite. Fuller's design of the home, once assembled, was extremely strong and able to withstand earthquakes and strong storms. The homes were heated and cooled by natural means and needed no ongoing maintenance. In fact the downward draft ventilation pulled particulates towards the baseboards and through filters eliminating the need to dust or vacuum.

From the must see Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village's online exhibit:

In 1991, the Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village acquired the parts to the only surviving prototype. For over the next eight years, staff researched the house, cleaning and restoring its 3,000 components. In October 1999, construction began on the house inside of the museum. The process of restoring and erecting the building became exhibition unto itself. On October 24, 2001, restoration was complete and the Dymaxion House was opened for public viewing.

Opening Day by Tanguay

Established in 1963, this internationally-renowned festival showcases independent and experimental film and video and is the oldest of its kind in North America. Each year the festival attracts entries from artists worldwide and screens more than 100 films. Every year they select a four-hour program of awarded and highlighted films for the Ann Arbor Film Festival Tour that travels around the country from March through December to college classrooms and auditoriums, art theaters, and museums.

Thousands of influential filmmakers have showcased early work at the AAFF, including luminaries such as Kenneth Anger, Agnes Varda, Andy Warhol, Yoko Ono, Gus Van Sant, Barbara Hammer, Lawrence Kasdan, and George Lucas.

The Festival came under fire in 2006 and was used as a mechanism to end all state funding for the arts. The AAFF fought back and won in December 2007. Read all about the 'Censorship Controversy'. While you're there read about the the cultural and economic impact that the film festival has on Michigan. As a result of the cuts in funding and censorship attempts the festival nearly went belly up but thanks to the creative folks that work to keep the festival going it survived.

"As part of the Endangered campaign, the volunteers and staff of the Ann Arbor Film Festival performed several Acts of Audacity, which can be viewed here. The acts were chosen by donors, who voted each time they made a contribution."

ArtFilmTalk.com has an audio interview with Christen McArdle that is worth a listen.

"Christen McArdle is the Executive Director of the Ann Arbor Film Festival, the oldest festival of its kind in North America showcasing avant-garde, documentary and independent films from around the world. We talk about the festival's fundraising campaign and the censorship controversy the festival has been involved with."

This year's festival will feature special programs and guest speakers including Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt, cinematographer-filmmaker Ellen Kuras, and artist Steve Kurtz. Larry Flynt will join producer-director Joan Brooker-Marks for the screening of her documentary Larry Flynt: The Right to be Left Alone, which plays on Saturday, March 29 at 7:30pm at the Michigan Theater.

Sunday the festival presents "Made in Michigan" which features 8 films by Michigan based filmmakers.

"The State of Michigan is home to a rich tradition of not just talented artists, but also an incredible breadth and diversity of styles. The films in this program present some of the most creative and colorful voices from the festival's home state."

For your viewing pleasure watch part 1 of 6 "2004 Michigan Television Highlight of Ann Arbor Film Festival" produced and directed by Christopher McElroy. Wander over to the AAFF YouTube page for the rest of this show and many other AAFF vids.

You may also want to register on the AAFF B-Side Community Home where you can track the festival buzz, create your personal calendar, rate and review films, and get recommendations for great films at the festival. Registration is not required to view the schedule or film list.. Another site of interest for Michigan film fanatics is MichiganFilm.org, a web site that highlights independent films from Michigan filmmakers and seeks to network those filmmakers and actors together. If you'd like to check out previous years award winners click on over to IMDB for a run down.

TheStrip by Hemicuda82 We do love our cars in Michigan, as this photo of the Summer Classic Car Show in Flint demonstrates. For a century the automobile has defined Michigan and now the demise of the auto industry is redefining us. At Absolute Michigan, we're trying very hard to fight past the "we lost a ton of jobs" and the bickering about who did what to who that is the media's ongoing saga and get to the "what do we do now?" place. If you're interested in going there too, check out Build Michigan and all the tons of businesses (6000+) on Absolute Michigan. You are also encouraged to add a link to your Michigan web site (for free!!)

Feb 26, 2006: River Rant is indeed ranting today about the Zoo, imagining how former Detroit Mayor Coleman A. Young might have handled the zoo issue. It's also a four-star look at one of Michigan's legendary political figures.

Feb 25, 2006: The Detroit News reports that on Friday afternoon, the council postponed discussion of the Detroit Zoo until Monday after receiving a revised version of a plan presented by Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's administration to turn the daily operations of the zoo over to the nonprofit Detroit Zoological Society.

Feb 21, 2006: Doug Geiger of Metroblogging Detroit pointed out this online petition to save the Detroit Zoo. It had 13,000 signatures when he tagged it and has over 80,000 now.

On February 18, 2006, the Detroit City Council voted 7-2 against a plan to transfer the zoo's operations and most of its funding to the nonprofit Detroit Zoological Society. The transfer would have made the zoo eligible for $4 million in state funding but now the zoo is reportedly in danger of closing.
