"People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don't even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, and the curious eyes of a child -- our own two eyes. All is a miracle." Thich Nhat Hanh

All winter we have the chance to walk on water, frozen water that is. Snowshoeing allows us to walk into the magic of winter, discovering the quiet sounds and subtle colors that await our discovery, often right outside our backdoor. Snowshoeing in Michigan is available to anyone who can walk; basically we can all discover the miracle of winter and walking on water.

The event Snowshoe d' Art offers us that opportunity. Spend a morning discovering the beauty of northern Michigan and the hidden beauty of the Michigan Legacy Art Park on Saturday, January 31st. The art park offers a snow-covered gallery of sculptures, a visual hide and seek of shapes and colors. All ages can begin their Saturday morning with a choice of guided tours, sharing it with friends or enjoying it alone.

Besides the spiritual side of snowshoeing, there is the obvious physical benefit of getting outside and discovering the winter landscape.

Snowshoeing is a weigh baring activity that all ages can participate in. It offers an aerobic workout that builds muscular strength in both the legs and upper body (when poles are used). Snowshoeing offers a low impact activity that is easy on joints especially in deep powder and the design of snowshoes act as shock absorbers on hard packed snow.

High caloric expenditure is another perk- allowing us to drink more hot cocoa and enjoy the comfort foods of the winter season!

There is no excuse to feel good, and connect with your inner spirit and strengthen your physical body!

Women's Winter Tour Weekend - January 31 - February 1, 2009

You can register for Saturday's Snowshoe d'Art at womenswintertour.com. It's just one of many events the Women's Winter Tour Weekend at Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville offers. The weekend benefits Active Women Now, an organization dedicated to supporting domestic abuse charities and shelters. Check the schedule for complete details, and definitely think about Saturday night's LUNAFEST and Chocolate, where you can learn about the nuances of African & South American chocolate while watching the short films in the LUNAFEST national traveling film festival. It's followed by dancing in your best sixties costume with music from the Fabulous Horndogs. On Sunday there's the original WWT, a cross-country ski or snowshoe through scenic, private courses with great food, wine and chocolate featured along the trail and at the main staging area!

About the Author

Kaye Krapohl is the founder of the Women's Winter Tour, and believes that art, as well as outdoor activity is a vital part of a person's development. An artist herself, she envisioned the Snowshoe d'Art as a way to help share her love of winter, but also support two causes near and dear to her heart: resources for women struggling to escape an unhealthy relationship by donating funds to domestic abuse centers and an appreciation for art.

While Winter 2008 hasn't been good for things like car makers, investments and national economies, it has presented us with some incredible conditions for skiing and snowboarding.

USA Today noticed that Midwest skiers have all kinds of options in Michigan where we have more downhill areas - 42 - than any state except New York with 200 chairlifts, 840 runs and 40 terrain parks! Our Michigan Ski Tour series from last year runs them all down and remains a great resource for skiers and snowboarders, giving you a tour of where to cross-country or downhill ski or board.

You can get a bunch more ski links on the Absolute Michigan Skiing & Snowboard page and also at the keywords skiing and snowboard. Some of our favorite links are the Michigan Snowsports Industries Association (featuring links to Michigan ski areas and all kinds of deals for skiers like the White Gold Card & free skiing for Michigan 4th graders), the powder-packed Michigan Ski Blog (deals, snow reports & webcams), Jim Neff's Michigan Skier TV and great Michigan destinations like Copper Peak Ski Flying and the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame and Ski Museum.

Anyone who has been following the news will know that with high gas prices, a lagging national economy and a still-depressed local economy, Michigan's summer travel forecast isn't the best.

We could advocate hiding in the backyard with a couple of cans of gas, nervously listening for Mel Gibson and gangs of gas-hungry Aussies, but that's already been done. Instead, we at Absolute Michigan have opted to see what we can do to help encourage folks from in and out of Michigan to help fight depression, boredom and having to cut the grass this summer with a Michigan vacation.

We'll feature stories, photos, videos and links of as much travel and touring in the Great Lakes State as we think you can stand. To win over some wallets, we're also putting out a call for Michigan lodging, travel and related businesses & organizations to offer packages, giveaways or whatever through Absolute Michigan. If you have ideas, send us an email.

And as always, we'd love to hear your ideas about great Michigan getaways, day trips and places to experience in the comments!

It features articles and updates from resorts all over the state about everything from free skiing days to ski film festivals to ski reports to webcams and photos. One of the coolest things is their events section, which keeps you informed about the latest happenings at Michigan's ski resorts like Crystal Mountain's Winter Familypalooza & Mountain Games (Jan 11-13, 2008):

Crystal Mountain’s furry and lovable mascots, the Snow Monsters, are inviting their mascot friends - including Sparty from Michigan State University and Mr. Cherry, mascot of the Traverse City North Stars hockey team, to name a few - to join families for a weekend of fun activities and friendly competition ... The marquee event will likely be the Mountain Mascot Games as mascots go head-to-head in a series of crazy challenges.

The blog is part of SkiMichigan - a downhill & cross-country ski network that's been providing great info for over a decade.

Michigan's tourism industry generates $17.5 billion dollars in annual revenue, 200,000 jobs and almost $1 billion in state tax revenue, and the architects of the plan have set the goal of growing Michigan to be one of the top five travel destinations in the nation.

On the organization side, the plan seeks to build the leadership, organizational structures and political alliances needed to push Michigan's tourism industry to the top. It also talks about builing collaboration and communication systems.

From the perspective of the tourism "product," it talks about providing the research and technical assistance to enable effective private and public sector investment in tourism and also the importance of paying attention to the customer's experience.

If you're in the Mid-Michigan area, think about stopping by the BoarsHead Theater in Lansing between now and Feb. 25th for some romantic laughs with "The People vs. Friar Laurence, The Man Who Killed Romeo and Juliet". The Lansing State Journal's Entertainment Guide, The Hub, bills it as a farce that pokes fun of the classics, theater, TV and just about everything else you can think of.

If you're looking for fun a little farther north, Ski Cadillac reports plenty of good snow at Caberfae Peaks, and if you stay with them today, you can ski or snowboard for free!

This weekend the folks at Leelanau Peninsula Vintners Association are offering Taste the Passion/Snowshoe Stomp for an opportunity to taste some truly excellent Michigan wines and race thru the beautiful North Country on snowshoes. If beer's more your thing, Timber Ridge in Traverse City is offering their first annual Suds and Snow, a chance to sample some truly delicious Michigan microbrews.

For those who like a little science with their sweeties, consider that University of Michigan psychology researchers have found that natural chemicals in the brain's pleasure hot spots not only make people want to eat more sweets, they also make them taste better. In the interests of balance, take your Valentine's flower questions to FlowerMD and MSU Horticulture Professor Bridget Behe.

If you're looking for something unique for your sweetie this year for Valentine's Day, Dianna Stampfler of Promote Michigan has 14 gift ideas and activities to consider. As usual, we'd love it if you'd add any other suggestions in the comments!

SEX. Nobody bottles it like Larry Mawby of L. Mawby Vineyards in Suttons Bay. This sparkling brut rose wine is a provocative blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes that appeals to the senses ... pinkish salmon in hue with red fruit aromas and yeasty accents ... and bubbles that tickle your nose and provide a soft delicious taste.

Chocolate Indulgence Pedicure at the Solace Spa at Mountain Grand Lodge and the Spa at Inn at Bay Harbor. Indulge your "sweetie" with this special chocolate pedicure. During this pedicure your feet are wrapped with a warm chocolate mask to melt away any tension. Continue this luxury while our therapist provides a soothing massage with white chocolate soufflé lotion. This pedicure also includes nail grooming, cuticle maintenance and polish.

Sweet Tooth Cooking Class. What better way to celebrate your love than to share some sweet sensations with your special someone? In this hand-on class from Sue Chef, Chef Kathleen Schiefler of Grand River Grocery shows each couple how to make scrumptious hand-dipped chocolate strawberries and truffles, Classic Italian tiramisu, Silky Crème Brule and Molten Chocolate Lava Cake. After creating these luscious treats enjoy a glass of champagne and enjoy the fruits(or should we say - sweets!) of your labor. From 6-7:30pm at Michaels & Associates.

Truffles from Grocer's Daughter in Empire. Try the 4-piece Spirit Collection where the all-natural chocolate truffles are infused with Courvoisier, cherry brandy, Grand Marnier and whiskey. The truffles are made with herbs, edible flowers, local honey and citrus zest and each is handmade with special decoration.

Zhivago Nights. This grand Garland Resort evening begins with a horse-drawn sleigh ride to the Bridge Inn, outlined with hundreds of tiny lights. It's there you'll recline by the fire, awaiting your five-course, wild-game dinner, paired with exquisite wines. Zhivago Night is the most fun, intimate and exciting meal event held at Garland. Another unique offering is the Gourmet Glide, where you cross country ski throughout the property to strategically-placed food stations including a chance to catch your own fresh trout and have it grilled up trailside. Lodging packages are also offered.

Romantic Horse Drawn Carriage Rides. Snuggle up with the one you love as you enjoy a leisurely ride through downtown Grand Rapids in a 19th Century Vis-à-vis white carriage from Grand Carriages. During the tour, travel through Ah-Nab-Awen Park and over the lighted bridges crossing the Grand River while listening to the clip-clop of horses hoofs. All this while wrapped in carriage blankets to keep warm during the crisp winter evenings. Rides are offered from 6-11pm.

Love is in the Air. Throughout the entire month of February, Tabor Hill Winery & Restaurant in Buchanan is offering special Dessert Wine Flights featuring the 2006 Vidal Blanc Ice Wine, Cherry Wine and Crème Sherry. While you're there, enjoy a fine dinner overlooking the vineyard.

The Detroit News feature Mich. aims more cash at tourism credits the $13.2 million "Pure Michigan" marketing effort for helping the state to hold serve in a tough tourism market, saying that:

Travel Michigan used half of a two-year, $15 million grant it received last year to help pay for Pure Michigan; the other half will be used this year to continue the promotion. The grant bumped the state to No. 14 nationally in tourism promotion spending in 2006 from No. 31 in 2006 ... The ads targeted the markets of Milwaukee, Cincinnati and southern Ontario for the first time. They also were shown in previously targeted areas -- Cleveland, Indiana and Chicago -- as well as Michigan.

Absolute Michigan Mini-editorial
I have to point out that nowhere in the article (or anywhere else that I can find) are numbers laid out that support the claims of what the campaign is doing for the Michigan travel industry. If you can find them, please send them over or post a comment. I also have to say that spending $30 million dollars with mostly non-Michigan companies seems to be a pretty clear violation of the state's Buy Michigan First program.

You can watch the entire Pure Michigan ad campaign at Travel Michigan. It's a wide-ranging feature that looks at where the industry began and where it is today.
According to the Michigan Snowsports Industries Association, downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, snowmobiling and other winter sports account for roughly a third of Michigan's 18 billion dollar tourism industry. The industry is under pressure from Michigan's struggling economy and our equally struggling winter snowfall totals.

Idlewild, wild and free
Our jumpin' rhythms always calling me,
Country air, sweet and strong,
Packing up my suitcase
So it won't be long,
Sing and dance 'til sundown,
It's such a rat race in Chicago town,
Still I feel like a child,
Cuz I'm heading up to Idlewild.

When Ray Kamalay of Lansing, Michigan, wrote this poem, he hoped to capture the excitement of Idlewild, a resort community in northern Michigan. From the 1920s through the 1960s, Idlewild in Lake County (about 60 miles north of Grand Rapids) was Michigan's most important African American summer resort.

African Americans responded to segregation by developing their own places where they could go to relax and play. Idlewild was one of these places.

Idlewild opened in 1912 and grew rapidly. By the late 1920s more than 6,600 African Americans from all across the nation and Canada had purchased lots at Idlewild. At least 800 summer homes had been built by 1927.

At Idlewild, visitors could swim, fish, boat, hike, and enjoy "a hundred other recreations." But most people came to Idlewild to relax and visit with friends and family.

Blacks from Chicago, Indianapolis, Cleveland, and Detroit purchased lots at Idlewild. Idlewild's most notable resident was Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, the most respected African American in the field of medicine. Dr. Williams bought a number of lots and sold them to friends and associates.

As the resort community grew, residents wanted other forms of entertainment. Soon, Idlewild became a showcase for black entertainers. Idlewild boasted the Paradise Club, the Flamingo Club, and the Purple Palace where Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Della Reese, Sammy Davis Jr., Stevie Wonder, Bill Cosby and many others performed.

Idlewild boomed until Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawing segregation. African Americans began to leave Idlewild and stay at the same resorts as whites.

Today, Idlewild is a much quieter town. A museum, a cultural center, and an annual celebration remind us of the important role Idlewild played in the lives of thousands of African Americans.
