All January we have been giving away ski tickets to Michigan resorts in our January Ski Month Giveaway. Our last giveaway is to one of the pioneering ski resorts in Michigan.

Boyne Mountain started in 1947 when Detroit native Everett Kircher moved to northern Michigan to build a ski resort. For just $1, he bought what is known today as Boyne Mountain. Kircher had many firsts including the world's first triple chair and first four-person chair and America's first 6-seat high-speed chairlift. Kircher also pioneered the design of much of the snow grooming equipment and techniques in use today and invented the Boyne Snowmaker, the first efficient marginal temperature snowmaking machine.

Boyne has grown into a nationwide empire that includes some of the nation's premier resorts like Big Sky, and also two four-season ski resorts in Michigan: Boyne Mountain and nearby Boyne Highlands. A cool feature of tickets at the two resorts is that you can use the same ticket at either resort - ski in the morning at one and finish your day at the other, giving you 115 downhill runs & terrain parks between the two resorts!

In addition to skiing and snowboarding, Boyne has expanded the opportunities for winter fun with ice skating, tubing, snowshoeing, dog sled and horse drawn wagon rides, zipline adventures and the Avalanche Bay water park. As you can see from the photo, Bay Mountain at The Homestead overlooks Lake Michigan and Sleeping Bear Bay, providing one of the most amazing views in the Midwest. Ski Month keeps rolling on Absolute Michigan with our latest giveaway, a pair of lift tickets to Shanty Creek near Bellaire in Northern Michigan.

The Michigan Snowsports Industries Association has jumped on board, offering a program called Discover Michigan Skiing that will give you a beginner lesson, ski or snowboard rental equipment and a beginner-area ski lift pass or cross-country trail pass at 23 Michigan ski facilities! It's available through January 31 and costs just $20 for cross-country skiing; $30 downhill skiing and $40 snowboarding. The program is open to everyone 7 years and older and you can get all the details at their website goskimichigan.com. While you're there, don't miss Cold Is Cool - a promotion that gives every Michigan 4th Grader FREE skiing at participating Michigan resorts.

There's an Upside and a Downside by farlane

Northern Michigan kicked off 2012 with a big snowstorm and in January, Absolute Michigan will celebrate all that beautiful snow by giving away 4 pairs of tickets to 4 great Michigan ski resorts. We'll also be heading out to the slopes to bring you reports & photos so stay tuned.

Our first giveaway (winner selected Jan 12, 2012) is from Crystal Mountain, a four-season ski, golf and spa resort located southwest of Traverse City in Thompsonville. All day today the Absolute Michigan team is at Creating Michigan Culinary Destinations, Michigan's first conference on Culinary Tourism. The conference was a hot ticket, and nearly 200 tourism industry stakeholders are getting ready to learn about Michigan's new initiative to increase tourism. You can learn all about the Michigan Culinary Tourism Inititative at that link and read on for updates as we have them!

Zingerman's Delicatessen by Ashley Dinges

1:30 pm The lunch keynote speaker is Ari Weinzweig of one of the giants of Michigan 's food scene, Zingerman's in Ann Arbor. Ari is definitely a fast talker, and related that he got started washing dishes at Maude's, and at that time, Tang and Space Sticks were his culinary adventures. He met co-founder Paul Saginaw at Maude's and -  5 years after opening a deli in a town that wouldn't support delis  at a location with no parking that people couldn't find - was hailed as a genius. Today the Zingerman's empire does $38 million in annual sales.

Ari says that (for him at least) all tourism is culinary. He relates  some "natural laws" from his book A Lapsed Anarchist's Approach to Building a Great Business that he thinks relate to building an authentic culinary destination. Natural law #1 is that an inspiring, strategically sound vision leads to greatness. He cautions that although  great visions come  from the heart, you need to develop your vision with enough richness and depth that people can understand what you're talking about. He shared a bit of the vision for the West Side Farmer's Market. With lines like "All these products have a story and none of them have traveled very far to get here," it's really clear that vision is a big part of what drives Zingerman's.

His 2nd law is "You need to give your customers some really compelling reasons to buy from you." He quotes Jim Hightower "Ain't nothing in the middle of the road but 2 yellow lines and a whole lot of dead armadillos." He  recommends that we seek to create offerings that have appeal for tourists AND residents to create a more resilient and dynamic customer base.

He closes with his belief that the customer experience is the most important thing. He breaks a recent study regarding employee attitudes toward their workplace into football terms: of the 11 players on a football team, only 4 know where the goal is, just two care who wins the game and all but 2 are just as likely to be  rooting for the other team as their own! Does this sound like your business? If it does, what can you do to change it? Ari suggests that maybe Michigan could steal a page from Hawaii and adopt the Ojibway word for welcome and become "The Aaniin State" ... because someone has to be the most welcoming place in country!

11:45 am - At the Building Lodging & Tour Packages session, Heather Price of Sandhill Crane Vineyards talked about the "Big Grape Bus" wine event they offer through the Pioneer Wine Trail in SE Michigan and all the pieces   - wine & food pairings, transportation, lodging and entertainment - that come together to create a compelling event. Steve Timmer of the Grand Traverse Resort in Traverse City echoed the importance of providing an all-inclusive experience and listed some of the things that his resort does including focusing on bringing local wines into their wine shop and even working with attendees on a cooking show.

One attendee (whose location shall remain nameless) wondered what to do when your area has little to offer in terms of culinary tourism. Steve suggested focusing on PR to invite food writers and the media and of course to leverage social media wherever possible. I asked him about if he had a sense whether today's traveler is more or less interested in packages. He said that while packaging remains an important part of travel marketing, he's finding that people are less interested in packages, preferring to design their own experiences. To me, that suggests that it's really important for all players in the culinary travel industry to make their services and offerings clearly available across a wide spectrum of media, including that most old-fashioned of media: making your friends and neighbors aware of what you do!

11 am The "Marketing Your Culinary Destination" featured Dianna Stamfler of Promote Michigan, Sam Porter of Porterhouse Productions and Paul Stermer of Fair Food Matters. An audience member asked Sam how he got his nearly 300 volunteers. He answered "It's all about fun. We take care of them pre and post event and engage them as partners to market and develop the events." He also suggested engaging your fans to help you grow your social media network. The audience seemed to agree that social media is a vital component of an overall strategy.

Dianna mentioned that it's the first-ever  Michigan Beer Week in Kalamazoo.  It's been developed  in conjunction with the Winter Beer Conference and bars, restaurants and retailers will be teaming up to offer beer tastings, tap takeovers, brewer meet-and-greets and other special events.

10  am Melody Johnson of the International Culinary Tourism Association was next up. She shared examples from all over the world of how everyone from third world nations on up the economic ladder are turning to culinary tourism as an economic driver. She cited rocketing technological advancements and our exploding interest in food as two prime drivers and talked about FLOSS (Fresh Local Organic Sustainable and Self-absorbed food). With  your average meal travelling 1500 miles, FLOSS is a concept that can  help keep food local.    Melody also gave a shoutout the the new "Boyne Appetit" marketing effort for Boyne City.

She showed three pictures - a museum, roller coaster and nice plate of food, and reminded attendees that food & drink IS an attraction as well, illustrating it with her discovery of Founder's apricot wheat - a beer that she had last night with dinner and very much enjoyed. It's not something you're likely to find outside of Michigan, so to have it again, she'll have to return. "The Michigan Experience" is what visitors are seeking - unique and memorable experiences that a tourist can brag about when he or she returns home.

9:40 am Steve Loftis of the Michigan Restaurant Association offered some thoughts about where Michigan's restaurants are and what will be on their radar in 2011. One of his recommendations is that restaurants look to younger/technologically savvy members of  their staff for  ideas on more effectively using technology to acquire new patrons, but also to work more with existing customers.  He also stated that "the L word" should be on everyone's mind as they work with their menu, trying to add more local offerings.

9:15 am Linda Jones of the Michigan Wine & Grape Council opened the conference with an introduction to culinary tourism. One new resource for culinary tourists that she pointed out are the Michigan Foodie Tours.
The foodie tours feature local food and unique experiences from the whitefish and pasties of the western UP to the 200 restaurants of Ann Arbor.

7 am Last night I had a chance to talk with Melody Johnson, a founding member  of the International Culinary Tourism Association. Melody is the organization's Community Manager and helps partners develop collaborations and inititiatives to capitalize on their culinary tourism assets. She gave me a simple thought to frame the day: "You always need to keep in mind what your customers  want to be successful. When people are coming to Michigan, they are wanting Michigan. They want authentic culinary experiences, the flavors and experiences that they can only get here."

Although saying "It's the food, silly" may seem a little simplistic, as the nation's second most agriculturally diverse state, Michigan is in a unique position to tout itself as an unparalleled food destination. The local food movement has already started many on the path to promoting the strength and quality of Michigan food & drink and this effort will hopefully encourage many more to  "make it a Michigan wine/beer/fill in the blank."

In the Michigan Immense Public Park by farlane

Nearly 2400 photographers have shared over 100,000 photos with Absolute Michigan and Michigan in Pictures in the Absolute Michigan pool. We are ready to go with the next photo contest in Absolute Michigan's Summer Photo Celebration, and we have decided to feature what nearly 8,000 photos in the pool feature, water.

Absolute Michigan's Celebrating Michigan's Water Photo Contest begins today (June 23, 2010) and entries end in a month (July 23, 2010).

Prizes

2 nights for 2 people, any season, subject to availability at The Homestead Resort in Glen Arbor, Michigan. The Homestead is located on the shore of Lake Michigan's Manitou Passage, right across the bay from the largest shifting sand dunes in the world, the Sleeping Bear Dunes. In any season, you'll find rich woods criss-crossed with hiking trails, bike-friendly country roads dotted with barns and farms, wilderness streams & backwoods lakes and miles and miles of secluded, sandy beaches that you can walk for hours. Spring means a lot of things

The annual Michigan Golf Show takes place this weekend (March 6-8, 2009) at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi. It's the largest consumer golf show in the nation, offering a chance to see the latest and greatest from over 400 exhibitors including retailers, manufacturers, resorts and representatives from over 100 Michigan golf courses!

All winter we have the chance to walk on water, frozen water that is. Snowshoeing allows us to walk into the magic of winter, discovering the quiet sounds and subtle colors that await our discovery, often right outside our backdoor. Snowshoeing in Michigan is available to anyone who can walk; basically we can all discover the miracle of winter and walking on water.

The event Snowshoe d' Art offers us that opportunity. Spend a morning discovering the beauty of northern Michigan and the hidden beauty of the Michigan Legacy Art Park on Saturday, January 31st. The art park offers a snow-covered gallery of sculptures, a visual hide and seek of shapes and colors. All ages can begin their Saturday morning with a choice of guided tours, sharing it with friends or enjoying it alone.

Besides the spiritual side of snowshoeing, there is the obvious physical benefit of getting outside and discovering the winter landscape.

Snowshoeing is a weigh baring activity that all ages can participate in. It offers an aerobic workout that builds muscular strength in both the legs and upper body (when poles are used). Snowshoeing offers a low impact activity that is easy on joints especially in deep powder and the design of snowshoes act as shock absorbers on hard packed snow.

You can register for Saturday's Snowshoe d'Art at womenswintertour.com. It's just one of many events the Women's Winter Tour Weekend at Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville offers. The weekend benefits Active Women Now, an organization dedicated to supporting domestic abuse charities and shelters. Check the schedule for complete details, and definitely think about Saturday night's LUNAFEST and Chocolate, where you can learn about the nuances of African & South American chocolate while watching the short films in the LUNAFEST national traveling film festival. It's followed by   dancing in your best sixties costume with music from the Fabulous Horndogs. On Sunday there's the original WWT, a cross-country ski or snowshoe through scenic, private courses with great food, wine and chocolate featured along the trail and at the main staging area!

Michigan ski resorts and McDonald's restaurants are once again offering Discover Michigan Skiing, an affordable introduction to the skiing and snowboarding.

The program has run every January for the past 15 years and includes a beginner lesson (covering basic maneuvering on skis or snowboards), ski or snowboard rental equipment and a beginner-area ski lift pass or cross-country trail pass. Twenty-four ski areas are offering the package January 5 through January 31, 2009.

The price for downhill or cross-country skiing is $30 for adults and $25 for children seven to 14 years old and the snowboard price is $40 for everyone 10 years and older. You'll need a voucher that you can pick up at participating McDonald's restaurants and also MSIA retail ski stores. If you can't find one there, you can also click on the link above.

The Michigan Snowsports Industries Association (MSIA) reports that thanks to our current bout of wintry weather, most ski areas across Michigan have fired up their snow guns. Some will open this weekend and more will be open by Thanksgiving. Ski areas planning to open on or before Friday, November 28 include: Boyne Mountain, Boyne Highlands, Marquette Mountain, Ski Brule, Crystal Mountain, Nubs Nob, Alpine Valley, Mt. Holly, Mt. Brighton, Pine Knob, Indianhead Mountain, Pine Mountain, Caberfae Peaks, Cannonsburg, Norway Mountain and Shanty Creek.

Anyone who has been following the news will know that with high gas prices, a lagging national economy and a still-depressed local economy, Michigan's summer travel forecast isn't the best.

We could advocate hiding in the backyard with a couple of cans of gas, nervously listening for Mel Gibson and gangs of gas-hungry Aussies, but that's already been done. Instead, we at Absolute Michigan have opted to see what we can do to help encourage folks from in and out of Michigan to help fight depression, boredom and having to cut the grass this summer with a Michigan vacation.

We'll feature stories, photos, videos and links of as much travel and touring in the Great Lakes State as we think you can stand. To win over some wallets, we're also putting out a call for Michigan lodging, travel and related businesses & organizations to offer packages, giveaways or whatever through Absolute Michigan. Alpine Valley - White Lake, MI

Alpine Valley is Michigan's largest ski area, offering slopes for advanced and beginning skiers. The snowboarding area offer 350 feet with verts of up to 10 feet high and a terrain park complete with a variety of ramps, rails and launches for really big air.

Apple Mountain – Freeland, MI

Bittersweet - Otsego, MI

Located near Kalamazoo, Bittersweet is 350 feet vertical, with a total of 20 runs served by the Sweet Express Quad, 2 Wonder carpets (great for beginners), 6 standard chairlifts,and 6 tow ropes. The Terrain Park has its own dedicated lift.

Cannonsburg - Cannonsburg, MI

Cannonsburg has one of those long runs that make a day fun. It's 1,500 feet, which is quite a feat with a vertical drop of 250 feet. Cannonsburg offers over 100 acres for skiing and snowboarding, and it has the highest vertical in southwestern Michigan.

Pando Winter Sports Park - Rockford, MI

Pando is a great family winter sports park located 15 minutes outside of Grand Rapids. They cater to the beginner as well as the advanced skier and snowboarder. If you don't ski, the tube hill offers exciting family fun for all ages and their cross country trails are groomed, tracked and in great condition.

Swiss Valley - Jones, MI

Swiss Valley entices folks to come ski from all over southern Michigan, Indiana and Illinois with 11 runs, a 225 vertical foot peak (highest in Southwest Michigan) and seven lifts, including 2 quads and one triple. Their terrain park offers tabletops, high spines, grind rails and pyramids for skiers, snowboarders and twin tippers who want to perfect their stunts.

Timber Ridge - Gobles, MI

Timber Ridge Ski and Snowboard Resort is a family-owned winter recreation facility that has served southwest Michigan for the past 39 years and with downhill skiing, snowboarding & snowtubing. The slopes include a terrain park with aerial features and rails, a snow tubing hill serviced by a handle tow and 60 skiable acres with 4 chair lifts and 5 surface lifts.

Boyne Highlands - Harbor Springs, MI & Boyne Mountain - Boyne Falls, MI

BOYNE features 111 downhill runs across Two Mountains, a variety of terrain parks for the beginning skier and snowboarder to the expert, the only six person high-speed chairlift in Michigan and many more lifts allowing you to get the most out of your time on the slopes. Caberfae Peaks – Cadillac, MI

Caberfae Peaks is located in Northern Michigan's snowbelt where the "lake effect" snow machine manufactures 150 inches of annual snowfall. The terrain at Caberfae Peaks is very diverse from gentle, 3/4 of a mile cruisers to thrilling steeps. You can drive further north, but you won't find bigger hills!

Challenge Mountain – Petoskey, MI

Crystal Mountain – Thompsonville, MI

Hickory Hills - Traverse City, MI

Big Powderhorn – Bessemer, MI

Mont Ripley Ski Hill – Houghton, MI

A 440 feet vertical drop ski area on 173 acres with 92 skiable acres. 24 runs for all abilities but our claim to fame is our open bowl trails that act like a snow vacuum. Because of our location on the Keweenaw Peninsula, sticking out into the largest lake in the world, we average 250 inches of dry lake effect snow each year. An exciting terrain park with tabletop jumps, gaps, spines, quarters, hips and grind rail parks. Night skiing 7 nights a week. Chalet with a cafeteria & lockers as well as ski shop and ski school. Open in early December.

Mount Bohemia – Keweenaw, MI

Mount Bohemia is unlike any other ski area in the Midwest. Chutes, cliff drops and a half-mile wide forest will challenge even experienced skiers and riders. Editor's note: it's confirmed that this is EXTREME skiing. With the longest runs, highest vertical and deepest powder in the Midwest, Mt. Bohemia is a true treasure for backcountry skiers and riders. Bohemia is all-natural, but with an average snowfall of 273", there's no problem! Going to Extremes on Midwestern Slopes in the New York Times has a sweet photo from Mt. Bohmeia.

Mt. Zion Recreational Complex - Ironwood, MI

Located on the campus of Gogebic Community College, Mt. Zion is the oldest winter recreation complex in "Big Snow Country". This complex also serves as a laboratory for the college's nationally recognized Ski Area Management Program and is well known for very reasonable rates, numerous "Learn to Ski and Snowboard Programs" for children, and a snowtubing park.

Norway Mountain - Norway, MI

Norway Mountain is located 10 miles east of Iron Mountain and provides a great mix of runs for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. They also have a terrain parks and cross-country and snowshoeing trail.

Pine Mountain Resort – Iron Mountain, MI

Pine Mountain is a quick, family-friendly getaway that's close to home and doesn't involve breaking into the family piggy bank. Kids 12 and under always ski free at Pine Mountain when accompanied by a paying adult. From bunny hill to black diamond, Pine Mountain has terrain that will suit all abilities.

Porcupine Mountains – Ontonagon, MI

Features the second highest vertical drop in Michigan or Wisconsin and you'll see spectacular, panoramic views of Lake Superior. The Porkies are home to one of the first alpine ski areas in the Midwest as well as some of the most scenic Nordic ski trails in the entire Great Lakes region.

Ski Brule – Iron River, MI

The first to open and the last to close, Ski Brule provides the best possible conditions at all times with an average season of almost six months! Ski Brule takes pride in their knowledgeable and proficient slope maintenance staff to provide the best corduroy cruisers, terrain trails, 1⁄2 pipe and parks.

Crystal Mountain's furry and lovable mascots, the Snow Monsters, are inviting their mascot friends - including Sparty from Michigan State University and Mr. Cherry, mascot of the Traverse City North Stars hockey team, to name a few - to join families for a weekend of fun activities and friendly competition ... The marquee event will likely be the Mountain Mascot Games as mascots go head-to-head in a series of crazy challenges.

On the organization side, the plan seeks to build the leadership, organizational structures and political alliances needed to push Michigan's tourism industry to the top. It also talks about builing collaboration and communication systems.

From the perspective of the tourism "product," it talks about providing the research and technical assistance to enable effective private and public sector investment in tourism and also the importance of paying attention to the customer's experience.

The festival takes place in and around the Resort (just east of TC). In addition to an outdoor recreation center with skating, sledding, horse-drawn sleigh rides, snowshoeing and cross country skiing (and rentals & round-the-clock bonfire), visitors can enjoy the Traverse City Ice-Carving Expo and the Cherry Capital Wine-Pairing Dinner with wines from the area's award-winning vineyards followed by a private concert featuring jazz flautist Alexander Zonjic. A highlight will be the Northern Lights Adventure Film Festival, a three-day showing of 20 independently-produced films from around the world exploring outdoor adventure, culture and the natural environment.
