Cribbage Pegs by the photoshoparama

The American Cribbage Congress will be holding the Grand National 28 in Grand Rapids on September 25–27, 2009. In addition, the Grass Roots Tournament of Champions will be held on Friday, September 25. Entrants who want to play Grass Roots cribbage on Monday–Thursday nights will have plenty of opportunity, for Michigan boasts thirteen Grass Roots clubs.

All events will be held at the same location: Crowne Plaza Hotel, located near the airport on the southeast side of town (5700 28th Street SE, Grand Rapids MI 49546). A special cribbage rate is available for all GN players (make reservations by calling 800.227.6963).

The event received a nice writeup in the Grand Rapids Press on mlive.com titled - Cribbage tournament brings nation's best players to Grand Rapids in battle for cash

It’s the first time this Who’s Who battle of card sharks has visited the state. For cribbage groupies, it’s a chance to see De Lynn Colvert, of Missoula, Mont., who is billed as the greatest player in the cribbage universe.

Ace cribbage players are sticklers for the rules, but the state’s mightiest wooden board warrior said all is fair in friendly banter.

While game code is sacred and “timber haulers” are despicable, that doesn’t stop experts from serving up a tall tales and trash talk.

These human calculators “love to drink, play cards and tell lies,” said Jeff Shimp, 70, of Grand Haven, who holds the imposing title of Life Master One Star in cribbage circles.

The tournament is expected to draw about 350 cribbage players from across the country. They will battle for bragging rights and a top prize of about $1,500, depending on the event’s take. Other tournaments, including more than a dozen satellite tournaments, kicked off Friday at the hotel.

mlive.com also has another feature with Muskegon cribbage board collector Dan Betz who 450 boards many of which were crafted by the Drueke Co., founded in Grand Rapids in 1914 and now is located in Ludington.

It is just too easy to grow into the mind set that where you reside there is absolutely nothing to do or that you have already seen it, done it, surfed it. We wager to bet that there are plenty of area attractions right under your that offer new experiences or old ones that need to be rediscovered. This kind of local exploration is a great way to reconnect with your community, save a few dollars while at the same time pouring a few back into your community's economy which in turn keeps your area of the Mitten prosperous and interesting to visit.

So we present to you:

Be A Tourist In Your Own Town brought to you by the fine folks at the Greater Lansing Convention and Visitors Bureau. Consider organizing one in your area!

About Be A Tourist In Your Own Town

Fifteen years ago, the Greater Lansing Convention and Visitors Bureau created this event to increase community awareness of it's attractions and the tourism industry's impact on the area. So once again the doors are open for you to explore culture and creativity in mid-Michigan.

As Lansing celebrates its 150th anniversary, take this opportunity to enjoy attractions that highlight both Lansing’s unique history as well as its innovative and progressive future. This year they have included old favorites such as Impression 5 Science Center, Potter Park Zoo and the Michigan Historical Museum, and added new hot spots like the FRAG Center, MSU’s Breslin Center, WKAR Studios and taste the new “Capital City Sundae” ice cream flavor at the MSU Dairy Store. You can view a complete list of the participating places to go and things right here.

How it Works:

For only $1 you can purchase a “passport” which allows you FREE admission to more than 60 area attractions, local businesses, and special activities on May 30, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. **Ages 3 and under do not require a passport. Get from place to place with CATA. For only 50 cents you will receive a stamp which will allow you to ride the Be A Tourist routes for the rest of the day for no extra charge.

Check out a slideshow of the Lansing area from the Absolute Michigan Flickr pool!

Old Downtown by cmu chem prof

Of course Absolute Michigan is all about buying what gifts you can through the web sites of Michigan's shops, stores and manufacturers. However, as the clock ticks down, shipping times mean you're probably going to have to finish up offline.

Our Michigan shopping section can help there too with hundreds of listings from all over the state for antiques, beauty & clothing, beer, wine & beverages, books, music & video, hobbies, toys & games, home & garden, jewelry & gifts and sporting goods in towns all across Michigan. even listings from elsewhere might help you think up a gift for that especially difficult special someone.

Keep the drive short and shop within Michigan's communities and you'll also be helping your community and state. As Think Dexter First explains:

A locally owned, independent business returns approximately 80 percent of each dollar spent back to the community. Local, independent businesses assist the community through a "multiplier effect": one dollar spent at a locally owned business will return five times that amount within the community through city taxes, employee wages and purchase of materials and supplies at other independent businesses. In addition, these businesses will return that dollar to the community through school funding, social services and contributions to local nonprofit organizations.

So get out, share a smile with your neighbors and actually enjoy gift giving. More thoughts? Share them in the comments!

Neurotic Mom is a blog at mLive that has been online since at least January 2004. Three years later, author Jen Eyer is still kicking down a unique blend of informative articles, useful links along with some good old-fashioned fretting.

Some of her posts (Non-toxic Toys, Vacation Stress) fit right into the concerns of the day while others (Gettin' sneaky in the kitchen) explore more general parenting concerns. All of them are designed to make parents (especially of the mom persuasion) a little bit more comfortable and prepared to deal with the 10,001 questions and challenges from illness, environmental concerns, product safety and behavioral & discipline issues (I found the point where the Candyland board went flying in Learning to Lose to be pretty nostalgic) and some of "The Things They Say":

A little comic relief. At dinner the other night, Kevin raised his glass and said, just goofing around, "I'd like to make a toast. To my family!" We all clinked glasses, sipped our drinks and went back to eating.

A moment later, Belle raised her glass and said, "I'd like to make some scrambled eggs to my family!"

It's a cool blog that should offer any parent some help and perspective.

The word of the week this week is toy. If you don't want to end up with the 2007 version of Chim-Chim (or some toy that ends up being recalled for lead), why not try and take it more local this year?

A few of the cool links we found are Down to Earth Toys, the Michigan Toy Soldier Co., the Enerdyne Science & Nature store and the Lionel Train Company, which is located in Chesterfield, Michigan. What we'd really like to hear about in the comments is any cool places you've found that make or sell toys along with any Michigan gift ideas for kids!

If you're interested in making a needy child's holiday a little brighter, think about using one of the many Toys for Tots drop-offs.

Today Transformers opens at screens across the country, and we thought it would be a good idea to give a shout out to the city of Detroit in general, and Detroit's Michigan Central Station in particular. As the still above shows, MCS gets some face time in the summer blockbuster. The building is a favorite of many of the photographers who provide work for Absolute Michigan, and we've assembled our Absolute Michigan MCS Transformers Explosion most especially for all of them. As always, please add more links to photos and MCS lore in the comments.

On the Absolute Michigan channel at chime.tv we're featuring a 1987 video of Michigan Central Station from the Sunday Times that explores the then operational station with a few old timers that you have to check out. There's also a tour from 1999 that shows how far the depot fell in just 12 years.

The photo to the right - Ago by Jurgen Nation (Anastacia Campbell) - is part of a great set of Michigan Central Station photos that does a wonderful job of bringing home the shattered beauty of this abandoned Detroit landmark.

A search of the michigancentralstation tag on Flickr reveals that MCS is a favorite of Detroit's urban explorers. From the dramatic profile to the empty waiting room to the haunted hallways, MCS seems to draw cameras more powerfully than any other building in Michigan. Also check out a tour of Michigan Central Station from UrbanPlanet.org and the Detroit's Abandoned Train Station gallery at SeeDetroit.com.

Over on Michigan in Pictures today we have a few photos from the book Detroit's Michigan Central Station that show the station in all its glory. The Michigan Central Station entry on Wikipedia includes a photo of Michigan Central Station from December of 1913. David Kohrman at Forgotten Detroit has a Michigan Central Depot page with a good look at the history of MCS. On it he says that he views the fall of this monument as the ultimate symbol of the automobile's complete triumph over public transportation, something I'd never thought of but that makes a heck of a lot of sense.

I guess that brings things around to the Autobots. Making stars of cars in the Freep takes a look at the 4 GM vehicles that will appear in Transformers, talks with former Detroit Wonk and current Jalopnik editor Ray Wert about the appeal of Transformers, and says that a new Transformers animated series will be set in the city of Detroit. Speaking of Jalopnik, it's probably the place to go for all your car to robot to car Transformers photos and video. Any that you can't find there are probably in the Transformers photo pool on Flickr.

It's no secret that here at AbsoluteMichigan we dig photos. A blog that we've been keeping our eye on for a while is Adventures of a Brit Abroad

Matt Callow is originally from the other side of the Pond, and has been living and working in the Ypsilanti area for the last several years. He's a photographer by trade, and has this to say about his work

I prefer working with vintage, toy, pinhole and a variety of cheap, plastic cameras. Not for any grand, artistic reasons, it’s simply that I like the look of the pictures they produce, and I like the way the cameras force me to work harder as a photographer...To me photography is a process. An organic process in which every stage feeds into every other, and the final result - the photograph - is just one of those equal stages.

While this blog features mainly his work and the various techniques he uses, its enjoyable to watch this organic process unravel. Matt highlights some of the various shows his work's been displayed at, and has done multiple workshops for students, exposing them to the joys of traditional and experimental photography.

Do yourself a favor, and stop by Adventures of a Brit Abroad ... and don't be surprised if you find yourself returning time and time again.

Editor's Note: Longtime readers of Absolute Michigan/Michigan in Pictures may recall our profile of Matt Callow on Michigan in Pictures. Those who do not will want to head over there and read it!

Leslie, Michigan by Joanne

The Detroit News has a guide to Black Friday shopping in the metro Detroit area - "Black Friday" being about time of year when store owners began to turn a profit and operate in the black. They also have a shopping blog ... or at least renamed their usual blog. The Lansing State Journal reminds you not to forget about Cyber Monday.

After reading the above articles - which are heavy on the Wal-Marts and the Crate and Barrels - I'd like to further remind you not to forget about your neighbors. Online and off, check out your downtowns and those of neighboring cities and towns. You'll probably find some nice deals and also gifts that look like you worked a little harder to find something special. Beyond that, studies demonstrate that dollars spent at locally owned businesses generate substantially more economic impact in communities:

Economic Impact Analysis: A Case Study, Local Merchants vs. Chain Retailers (pdf) The study indicated that for every $100 in consumer spending at Borders, the total local economic impact (LEI) is only $13. Conversely, the same amount spent at BookPeople, for example, yields $45 in LEI, more than three times as much.

To connect with the local and statewide shopping scene in Michigan, parking the car downtown and walking around is a great start. You might want to check out Absolute Michigan's shopping section or our list of Michigan Chambers of Commerce. You can also try a search for whatever you're looking for in the box at the top right (antiques, jewelry, toys). So many Michigan-owned stores have online outlets as well, so checking out sites all over the state may yield good results! You can also keep an eye out for cool holiday art/craft fairs like the Ypsi Shadow Art Fair.

In fact, there are so darn many communities, stores and gifts that there's no way we could list them all here. We can (and will) ask you all to post a comment with a gift or shopping experience that YOU recommend. If you own a store or sell something over the internet, we invite you to post it here. Also, if you have any more articles on the benefits of local shopping, post those too! We do ask, however, that your links be to Michigan-made products - we have this "All Michigan, All the Time" policy...

The Detroit Free Press has a feature on something we stumbled on the other day: a collection of aerial videos of the Lansing & Detroit areas taken with a model plane. In and around Detroit, there videos of Belle Isle (above), Ford Field and the surrounding area, Tiger Stadium, Woodward Avenue, the Detroit Yacht Club, the University of Michigan's stadium and the Michigan Central Depot. In the Lansing area, check out the Michigan Capitol and the MSU campus.

The architect of these videos is Mitchell Dombrowski, chief of obstetrics and gynecology at St. John Hospital & Medical Center in Detroit and a professor at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. His equipment includes a battery-powered, radio-controlled Fly Dragon plane that weighs less than 1 1/2 pounds. The camera is a Pentax Optio S5z that shoots 30 frames a second. Dombrowski put it inside an empty Altoids mints tin with a hole cut for the lens.

Although the motion of the plane makes it a little choppy and after watching several, you may long for a soundtrack (attention: mashup artists - get busy!), we think you'll enjoy these videos!

Read MOTOR CITY JOURNAL: Scene from above in the Freep.
