Next Tuesday, February 14th is Valentine's Day - a day for lovers, sweethearts, paramours ... and chocoholics. Like it, love it or hate it, Valentine's Day is an annual tradition that will see over one billion valentines will be given out worldwide, 85% of those by women. However you choose to celebrate the holiday, consider making it a little more special with something from Michigan.

There's plenty of delicious Valentine's Day recipes from Pure Michigan at Michigan.org. The Food Network also offers up some culinary advice for Valentine's Day complete with a full Valentine's menu. Lansing's WLNS CBS channel 6 website has a complete Valentine Day section on their website where you can learn all kinds of useful information including (who knew?) that chocolate is an aphrodisiac. The folks at the Grand Rapids Press and mlive.com have some tips for Valentine's Day cooking with kids.

We have to remind you that February is National Cherry Month and cherries make a great and healthy way to bring the distinctive Valentine red into your celebrations. An affordable and tasty non-alcoholic beverage are cherry sparklers made with Michigan cherry juice and sparkling water.

On the adult beverage front, a whopping 95% of wine drinkers agree that wine makes a perfect gift, and you can't go wrong with a  Michigan wine or  Michigan beer! The folks at MyNorth offer a listing of Northern Michigan sparkling wines to set the tone for your celebration. While bubbles are big, beers can also be appreciated. Dianna at Promote Michigan has let us in on her Love Affair with Michigan Beer, which features all kinds of special and regular brews from Michigan's brewmasters. You can stay awake Ann Arbor Brewing's Espresso Love featuring coffee, cozy up to the Decadent Dark Chocolate Ale from Atwater Brewing or go a little lighter with Dragonmead's Redwing Raspberry Wheat. This is a great feature so definitely check it out!

My favorite holiday movie is National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989). Clark Griswold, (Chevy Chase), our hero, has a plan for the traditional Griswold family Christmas that includes fifty thousand twinkling outdoor lights on the roof. When Clark drags his entire family out to see his masterpiece, the lights don’t work. The frustrating, yet entertaining, effort to fix the problem resonates with me (This includes Clark on the roof checking each individual bulb.). My favorite part comes when Clark prevails, the family is impressed, and he thanks his father for teaching him about exterior illumination.

Beginnings

Wallace Bronner (1927-2008) knew that exterior illumination is essential for the holidays. We are all familiar with his enormous enterprise: Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland, located on 25 Christmas Lane in Frankenmuth. Initially, this behemoth of holiday cheer started as a signage business. During the early forties, Wally worked as a sign painter and a clerk at the Hubinger Grocery Store, which was owned by his maternal relatives. Part of his job included designing window displays. In 1945, as Frankenmuth celebrated its centennial year, Bronner Display and Sign Advertising was in demand for painting signs and decorating store windows and parade floats. That year Wallace Bronner met Irene Ruth Pretzer, the woman he would marry on June 23, 1951 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Hemlock, Michigan.

Irene was instrumental in helping Wally land a monthly window display contract with the Jennison Hardware Company of Bay City (c. 1947) (Irene had attended Bay City Junior College and boarded at the home of G.W. Cooke, president of the hardware company.). Bronner’s work for the hardware company resulted in a referral to the town of Clare, Michigan (1951). This first municipal holiday commission was to design decorative lamppost panels. After that job, Wally hired his friend Fred Bernthal to look for new clients in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Ontario.

Bronner also entered into contracts with General Plastics Corporation (Marion, Indiana) and Mold-Craft Corporation (Port Washington, Wisconsin). These companies provided street trims and ornaments, latex Santas, reindeers and nativity scenes. In 1952, Bronner staged two shows exhibiting outdoor Christmas decorations, one in the Frankenmuth Township Hall, the other at the St. Lorenz School gymnasium. Both were successful. However, both venues were temporary. Bronner decided to rent a more permanent building, a vacated one-room schoolhouse (formerly Frankenmuth School District Number 1). Thus, year round exhibit of Christmas decorations became possible! “At first the people of the community thought the idea to be rather unusual, but accepted it fully when Frankenmuth became known as the Christmas Town.” (Bronner’s 2005 Corporate History, page 35.)

Herman Bronner (Wally’s father) was a building contractor and stone mason. He convinced his son to “think big” by changing the plans for the first Bronner-owned building from two, L-shaped, rectangular buildings to one large, square building. The Bronner’s store at 121 East Tuscola (a lot adjoining Aunt Hattie’s grocery store) opened in 1954. It was divided into two sections, one space for the sign painting business, the other for Christmas decorations.

Wally was grateful for his dad’s vision and business acumen. The municipal clientele grew to include shopping centers and commercial interiors. As buyers selected decorations for their stores and churches, their wives requested home decorations. From 1954 to 1963, Bronner exhibited at the Saginaw County Fair, which, at the time, boasted numbers of three hundred thousand people. By 1960, the company was officially incorporated, and home decorations were added to the product line. In 1964, the first billboard advertising Bronners appeared on I-75, ten miles south of Exit 136 (Frankenmuth). Many travelling up North are familiar with that sign. Subsequent ones (more than sixty located in seven states) continue to extol the importance of holiday cheer and illumination.

East Lansing is a charming University town with a wide variety of shops, restaurants, galleries and the beautiful Michigan State University campus across the street. The East Lansing Art Festival is produced by the Art Festival Board of Directors under the auspices of the East Lansing Arts Commission/City of East Lansing.

The East Lansing Art Festival is held the weekend preceding Memorial Day weekend. The festival operates 10am-6pm on Saturday and 10am-5pm on Sunday.

Michigan State University Arts and Crafts Show

Celebrate spring at the Michigan State University Arts and Crafts Show on May 22nd & 23rd, 2010. In its 46th year, the show has more than 325 artists from across the nation and offers something for everyone.

The MSU Arts and Crafts Show is one of the largest arts and crafts shows in the state. This year's show includes many returning favorites as well as brand new artists. There will be a broad range of exhibitors selling handmade items. Items include; candles, furniture, jewelry, home and yard décor, aromatherapy, clothing, children's toys, painting, photography, pottery, sculpture and much more.

The Arts and Crafts Show is held outside on the grounds of the MSU Union. This show is held on Saturday and Sunday with over 300 exhibitors displaying items in a park-like setting on the MSU campus. Most exhibitors utilize portable structures for their displays. The UAB office can provide current booth fee prices. The East Lansing Art Festival is staged one block north of campus with over 225 exhibitors. More than 60,000 people annually attend these two outdoor shows.

The show takes place on the grounds of the MSU Union, near the corner of Grand River Ave. and Abbot Rd. in East Lansing. The show hours are Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission to the show is FREE!

AnnArbor.com has a look at Cyber Monday that notes that online sales are expected to increase slightly in 2009, but that an overall dip in holiday spending may make it a wash.

Price remains the driving factor for most consumers as the national unemployment rate hovers at 10.2 percent and Michigan's unemployment rate is 15.1 percent. For many major retailers, this means that offering free shipping is a necessity, said Larry Freed, CEO of Ann Arbor-based ForeSee Results, an online customer satisfaction firm.

“Discounts are going to be big, and free shipping's a part of it, no doubt,” Freed said. “It's almost a cost of entry at this point.”

While many of us count chocolate as a food group, there's no doubt that interest in "the 5th food group" peaks around Valentine's Day. Whether it's pairings of Wine & Chocolate, Beer & Chocolate or just plain Chocolate & More Chocolate, it's the time of year to celebrate the tastiest of health foods. It's more than just for Valentine's Day as researchers have found that chocolate benefits your mood too, and goodness knows we can all use a little boost here and there in February and March!

Because I would rather think about chocolate than work, I spent a little time digging around Absolute Michigan's chocolate collection to help you indulge your sweetie's - or your own - passion for chocolate.

I have to start with the chocolate I eat the most of: Grocer's Daughter Chocolate from Mimi Wheeler. I am lucky enough to manage her web site, and thereby to be the recipient of all kinds of tasty truffles and chocolate delights. While it may be too late to order for Valentine's Day this year, keep Mimi's Valentine's boxes in mind and visit her shop in Empire any time for some amazing handmade goodness.

Last weekend at the annual Taste the Passion wine tour, I met Patricia of Patricia's Chocolates in Grand Haven.   Her gorgeous artisan ganache and caramel chocolates (pictured right) have to be seen (and tasted) to be believed. You can view her selection and take my word that beyond flavors like Michigan Blueberry or Cherry and Hazelnut Cube are some chocolates that will take you to a whole new level like Saigon Cinnamon and perhaps the best chocolate I've ever had: Earl Grey Tea! Pewabic Pottery is a living treasure and offers visitors an exciting glimpse of a little known part of American history. Founded in 1903 during the Arts & Crafts Movement, Pewabic is nationally renowned for its tile and pottery in unique glazes. Today it is a non profit ceramic art education center which welcomes 70,000 visitors annually.

Nature's Way Woodworking is a small family owned business in Michigan's Upper Peninsula that creates furniture, maple accessories, kitchen items and gifts out of the distinctly whorled birdseye maple. You have to check out their amazing rocking chairs! Their showroom is located in the small historic town of Alberta which was built by Henry Ford in the mid 1930s. The town is presently owned and operated by the School of Forestry & Wood Products of Michigan Technological University.

Most often, the phenomenons which occur in nature are my inspirations, but sometimes a different technical presentation is needed. In 1991, the idea of a form-fitting bracelet with an interchangeable stone memento led to the design of a single bracelet base and a selection of stone tops. After more than a year of developing prototypes to be both secure and comfortable, the dual concept evolved into this copyrighted curved base which attaches to various attractively bezeled stone tops via connecting hooks and loops.

Becky Thatcher Designs creates magnificent jewelry and has locations in Glen Arbor, Leland, Traverse City and Harbor Springs (Key West too for you snowbirds!). You can also shop via webcam and read about jewelry and store events in their blog.

Copperland is located in Lake Linden, Michigan (Houghton County) and is operated by the Gariepy family. Founder Jake Gariepy worked twenty-eight years as a furnace operator for the Calumet & Hecla Mining Co. in Hubbell, MI and learned copper-smithing after the mining company ceased operation. He was a welder on the famous Bishop Baraga Statue erected in 1972 that now overlooks Keweenaw Bay between L'anse and Baraga.

In 1977 he founded Copperland, which is now run by his son and daughter-in-law.

Patterns emerge from the Fordite depending on the angle of the cut or depth of the polishing. Since technology has replaced the spray booth, the Fordite "mines" are dry.

The Seasons of the EmmaLee. Everyone loves a good love story, and this first novel by Michael Lindley of Ada make a great gift for the book lover in your life. The Detroit News has a guide to Black Friday shopping in the metro Detroit area - "Black Friday" being about time of year when store owners began to turn a profit and operate in the black. They also have a shopping blog ... or at least renamed their usual blog. The Lansing State Journal reminds you not to forget about Cyber Monday.

After reading the above articles - which are heavy on the Wal-Marts and the Crate and Barrels - I'd like to further remind you not to forget about your neighbors. Online and off, check out your downtowns and those of neighboring cities and towns. You'll probably find some nice deals and also gifts that look like you worked a little harder to find something special. Beyond that, studies demonstrate that dollars spent at locally owned businesses generate substantially more economic impact in communities:

Economic Impact Analysis: A Case Study, Local Merchants vs. Chain Retailers (pdf) The study indicated that for every $100 in consumer spending at Borders, the total local economic impact (LEI) is only $13. Conversely, the same amount spent at BookPeople, for example, yields $45 in LEI, more than three times as much.

To connect with the local and statewide shopping scene in Michigan, parking the car downtown and walking around is a great start. You might want to check out Absolute Michigan's shopping section or our list of Michigan Chambers of Commerce. You can also try a search for whatever you're looking for in the box at the top right (antiques, jewelry, toys). So many Michigan-owned stores have online outlets as well, so checking out sites all over the state may yield good results! You can also keep an eye out for cool holiday art/craft fairs like the Ypsi Shadow Art Fair.

We'll start off with this St. Valentine's Day information from Wikipedia. It offers essential holiday facts such as: In Ancient Rome, the day of February 15 was Lupercalia, the festival of Lupercus, the god of fertility, who was represented as half-naked and dressed in goat skins. (Note that Lupercian behavior is probably frowned upon by your community).

Leelanau Enterprise has a nice feature about 35 married couples who have been "sweethearts" for more than 50 years who were recognized for their commitment by students last week. The story and the secrets the couples shared make a great read for Valentine's Day (or any time of the year). Several readers share their romantic stories in the Lansing State Journal.

The way to a man (or woman's) heart is often through the stomach, and the State of Michigan web site has some great recipes for Valentine's Day including a Michigan Cherry Cream Pie that would probably guarantee your valentine would be happy (if a trifle portlier).

The state also recommends some Michigan Wines for your Valentines including Chateau Chantal 'Celebrate', St. Julian Sparkling Raspberry, several Michigan Cherry Wines and (of course) L. Mawby's 'Sex' (a sparkling wine that we are certain enjoys at least a 25% sales boost due to the name). In addition, they point to an amazing number of Michigan winter wine events (many in early February with a romantic angle).

Travel Michigan has put together a great selection of Romantic Escapes in Michigan. Their getaways and packages are perfect for couples who are looking to get away from it all (but not each other).

DetroitWonk has a post titled Valentine's Day: Detroit is For Lovers that features Metro Detroit-related gifts for significant others. Items include a nifty "Detroit is for Lovers T-Shirt" from Pure Detroit and Motor City Makeup. They STRONGLY suggest getting your significant other something more than just lip balm and a t-shirt ... maybe our readers could offer some suggestions via the link above. Also check out Unpredictable, Urban Flavor's Detroit Valentine's Page that features something for all of the senses including (for smell) the tip to (instead of sending roses), "Send your sweetheart a bouquet of stargazer lilies. These beautiful lilies have a dark pink center with white edges and can fill a room with its sweet scent. Plus, these pretty lilies last days longer than your typical rose."

Speaking of flowers that aren't roses and that last longer, my florist (who doesn't have a web site) gave me the great idea of giving live flowers. The hyacinth I gave remained in bloom for weeks and was very well received. Plus, we'll be able to plant the bulbs in the fall.

No Valentines Day page would be complete without something for the many folks who are less than fond of the holiday. Jenna Passut of the Oakland Press has observations of and web sites for those who don't much like Valentine's Day.
