This year the Berkfield & Co Ltd./Waterford Insurance Agencies participated in the Outdoor Garden Project. The goal was to plant, grow, harvest and donate 500 lbs of organic vegetables. They chose the Open Door Outreach Center in Waterford, MI as their charity partner. To learn more about them, please visit their website at http://opendooroutreachcenter.com/. As of final harvest they have exceeded our goal by nearly 350 pounds, making the total amount of food donated 850 pounds.

The Open Door Resource Center will celebrate 30 years of service to the Waterford Community in 2010. To help celebrate their achievement the Berkfield & Co Ltd./ Waterford Insurance Agencies and the Waterford Chamber of Commerce are joining in an effort to raise 30,000 lbs of fresh and non-perishable food by August of 2010. Stay tuned for more news about this project and how you might help us reach our goal.

The number of people needing help in our community continues to grow. A reliable source for food is something we can all appreciate and help provide.

Edmund Fitzgerald, crew to be remembered Tuesday

Each year, in honour of the Edmund Fitgerald crew, a bell is rung 29 times during ' Last Watch Ceremony.' The 30th ring is for all mariners lost on the Great Lakes.

Regardless of whether these photos are real or not, cougars have been officially confirmed in Michigan. From John Flesher of the Traverse City Record-Eagle:

State wildlife officials say they've confirmed the sighting of a cougar in Michigan's eastern Upper Peninsula. The Department of Natural Resources said Wednesday it had determined that a trail camera in Chippewa County snapped a photo of a cougar wandering by one night last month. Also, the DNR said it had verified two sets of cougar tracks found recently in the U.P. One was spotted near DeTour in late October and the other this week near Gulliver in Schoolcraft County

Thank you for the very supportive post. I am happy to report that when Michigan Governor Granholm signed the remainder of the state budget segments on Oct. 30, that she did not veto funding for MSU Extension.

"Ignite 09 - Uniting Voices for Arts and Culture in Michigan" will be held on Nov. 10 by ArtServe Michigan. ArtServ is a statewide non-profit advocacy organization for the arts. This year's theme is increasing collective support for arts programs.

Meet Daughter of ROBERT C. RAFFERTY

I am honored and excited to be invited to attend the upcoming service held this
November 10th in River Rouge.I will be coming from Kansas to honor my dad and the other
28 crewmen.My father was the " Old Cook" referred to in the Gordon Lightfoot song.
There will be so many events having to do with the FITZ I hope to be able to fit it all in.
I think it's great to include the school kids learning about the Great Lakes and the ships
that have sailed on them.
I grew up in Toledo Ohio and watched from many ports my dads ship sail off with a load
of iron ore or coal. Those good memories never go away. Hope to see you there.
All are welcome to honor and remember that fateful night.

November 10 - Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Service
. A memorial service for the men lost on the Edmund Fitzgerald will be held on November 10 at Dr. Henri Belanger Park in River Rouge, Mi. The service will be held near the Mariners Memorial Lighthouse beginning at 6:00 p.m. The tug boat will be on hand to take out a wreath to be placed on the river. The service will feature a plaque presentation, bell ringing, lantern lighting, and refreshments will be served. The service will be at River Rouge Michigan on the Detroit River next to where the ship was built at the slips and on the other side is where Zug Island is located. MAP
