The word of the week this week is APPLE. Taste the Local Difference says that Apples are ready to pick in Michigan. In addition to lots of apple facts and some cool apple recipes (Apple Nachos??), they say that:
Apples are the largest fruit crop grown in Michigan. There are over 8 million apples trees in commercial production throughout Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. In 2005, Michigan produced 780 million pounds of apples!Michigan is also the number one supplier of apple slices for commercial apple pies, and is a major producer of applesauce and apple cider. The Guinness Book of World Records claims that the largest apple weighed 3 lbs. 2 oz., and it came from a tree in Caro, Michigan.
A 3.2 pound apple? That's like a whole pie! We invite you to click over to the Absolute Michigan group on Flickr for photos of apples. The photo from the group is Red McIntosh apples by vostok71. He writes:
This photo should support the new immigration bill. Farmers pay $20.00 cash to fill this box with apples. One Mexican I knew did 11 boxes in a day by himself.
$20 box ... something to think about for sure. Over on Michigan in Pictures there's a cool old apple picking photo from Old Mission in the 1890s courtesy the Archives of Michigan.
We should probably link to the Michigan Apple Committee web site too. If you have an apple link, a story or photo to share, post a comment!
