MN DNR fire bombers by mryooperdewey
Ann Arbor based Edward Vielmetti has maps and links for the massive Sleeper Lake Fire that has burned about 20,000 acres in Luce County north of Newberry in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Gina Harmon of Superior Sights has some great photos and coverage of this devastating fire from a local perspective. They have also set up a thank you message board for firefighters.
WLUC-TV has a brief report on the fire and there's also updates from the DNR. The Mining Journal says this is Michigan's worst wildfire in a decade.
Last night in the Absolute Michigan pool, one of the members who lives in the evacuation zone posted a personal account of the fire and asked for prayers for rain and calm winds ... or wind from the NW to push the fire back to burned areas to starve it. Another person posted a photo and some recollections of a 1920s cabin that the fire destroyed (and that video we link to above).
Here's a YouTube clip of a CL215 fire bomber swooping some water out of Round Lake. (too cool ... if too short!)

Lady Rocker on MySpace has some more photos and listed the 2 Michigan fires that were larger:
On a personal note, we were smelling the smoke from the fire down here in Leelanau (over 75 miles south).
The Sleeper Lake Fire is reported to be 50% contained. This article also says that wind shifts could produce a flareup and that even after it's "out" the boggy nature of the land mean worries for weeks or months to com.
Here's some aerial photos of the fire from a photographer in the Absolute Michigan pool. The DNR has a pdf of photos from the ground too.
Hello to all from Toledo Ohio. We have 105 acres of beautiful forest in the UP.
It is truly a treasure to behold. Your courage and determination are greatly appreciated by us. I wish I could be there to help. Thank you a million times over for your help. Many Blessings to you all for fighting for what God has freely given us to enjoy and learn from. Stay safe!
Newberry is and will always be my home. I am very sad to hear of the fire, but I greatly appreciate all the effort and hard work to stop this catastrophy. I thank all who have helped to save my homeland. A million thanks to all who have served and a well deserved pat on the back.
There are reports of awesome morel hunting in the fire area - I clipped some details here:

Cool! Thanks for posting this. I love it when stories come back around (especially when they have a sort of happy ending).
More fires in the UP in May 2009, and people are finding this page. I put together details on the Black River Falls fire near Ishpeming

which includes a fire map as well as links to some good solid local reporting from the Marquette Mining Journal.
