Michigan Mock Election Coverage

The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that yesterday Ed Wodek’s classroom at Leland Public School looked more like a campaign headquarters as young politicians bustled about in a flurry of red, white and blue. They are getting ready to host 1,000 students from 10 schools in Leelanau County and Traverse City who will hear from state and national candidates and cast their votes. This year’s rally will also be broadcast live over the Internet by MichiganLiveEvents.com and at Absolute Michigan.

Wodek created the project 20 years ago as a way to engage students in learning about civics and democracy and students research a candidate to speak on their behalf or serve on committees charged with coordinating public relations, construction, technology, painting, programs and ballots.

This year, Leland students also will tabulate statewide results for the National Student/Parent Mock Election, a program that coordinates affiliated mock elections.

Read Voting comes early to school in the Record-Eagle. More information about the event and the webcast is available at www.absolutemichigan.com/politics.

It's inspiring to see kids so into this! Every school should be doing this very thing.

It is a really cool thing Jenny.

In answer to yours and Jimmy's comments, it is something that many schools are doing. Tomorrow we should have the results from tens of thousands of mock election votes from schools all over Michigan posted!

I think the kids are really proud. I know I'm proud of them. Many schools DO hold mock elections. If your local one doesn't, now is a great time to point them at the national mock election web site!
