Tiger Stadium (formerly known as Navin Field and Briggs Stadium) is a stadium located in the Corktown neighborhood of Detroit, Michigan. It hosted the Detroit Tigers Major League Baseball team from 1912 to 1999, as well as the National Football League's Detroit Lions from 1938 to 1974. It was declared a State of Michigan Historic Site in 1975 and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1989. The stadium is nicknamed "The Corner" for its location on Michigan Avenue and Trumbull Boulevard. Many in the metropolitan Detroit area feel that the stadium serves as a living metaphor for the city.

On April 20, 1912, Navin Field was opened, the same day as the Boston Red Sox's Fenway Park. The intimate configurations of both stadiums, both conducive to high-scoring games featuring home runs, prompted baseball writers to refer to them as "bandboxes" or "cigar boxes".

The reports of Tiger Stadium’s demise are greatly exaggerated. For over a year The Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy has been quietly working on a plan to preserve the entire playing field and a significant portion of the beloved old ballpark. This is a plan the Detroit City Council approved last summer because we don’t want to build a monument to honor Detroit’s baseball history, we want to keep it.

    First pitch was thrown at the Corner

    Baseball was played for the first time at Michigan and Trumbull in Detroit on April 28, 1896.

    The Tigers beat the Columbus Senators, 17-2, in Bennett Park, named after former catcher Charlie Bennett, who had lost his legs in a train accident in 1894.

    Jack Fifield of the Tigers, clad in the new gray uniform with maroon trim, threw out the first pitch and later, team captain and left fielder George Stallings hit the first home run.

    Team owner George Arthur Van Der Beck spent $10,000 to build the 5,000-seat ballpark.

    The Corner would later become Navin Field (1912), Briggs Stadium (1938) and Tiger Stadium (1961). The last game was played there Sept. 27, 1999.
