Schools are big businesses, multi-million dollar employers that spend a good part of every dollar they receive providing jobs in nearly every community in the state of Michigan.
If we crash these businesses - especially immediately prior to what already looks like a shaky summer travel season - we could find ourselves in even bigger trouble. Teachers and school employees have significantly more vacation time than other professions. Just as in Europe, more time off leads to more travel.
Here's hoping that the legislature and the governor can see beyond their ideological differences and craft a solution that puts a very significant Michigan employer, our public school system, on a secure footing for this year and years beyond.

Simply put, if we don't solve the problem of Michigan's schools - Detroit schools in particular - then we can forget about solving the problem of Michigan and we can forget about a Michigan recovery. The quality - or lack thereof - of the education we provide for our children is at the root of every other problem this state faces. It all comes back to what we're doing for the children.
My daughter is planning on moving to Michigan. She has a PA teacher certificate and is new out of college. Does any one have advice for her as to finding a teaching job there?
