Why anyone would want to govern Michigan is a wonder. The state has deep-seated economic problems, and it is riven by inter-and intraparty bitterness of a sort to make any Governor look bad...
Thus begins a 1962 feature from TIME Magazine titled The Crazy Quilt that The Center for Michigan called out in their last email. With references to economic problems like decentralization of the auto industry that kept Michigan stalled for a decade, the state not keeping pace with the demands of a new age and a legislature increasing programs for schools and welfare (reluctantly) all the while balking at providing adequate tax money to pay for them, a mounting deficit and business tax policies that discouraged new businesses from setting up shop in Michigan, one wonders if a crash course in history might be in order for our elected officials.
Hint: the "solution" involved a deep re-examination and re-working of Michigan's institutional, economic and educational structure and cooperation by both parties.
