Last night the Detroit Shock captured their third WNBA crown in 5 years with a 76-60 rout of the San Antonio Silver Stars. From the Game 3 recap on the Shock's web site:
The Shock were supposed to be too injured, too old or too complacent – take your pick – to overcome the San Antonio Silver Stars, owners of the league's best record and first-time participants in the WNBA Finals.
In other words, Detroit couldn't have been in better shape to prove everybody wrong again.
Detroit did not simply regain their WNBA crown Sunday but did so in a fashion that eliminated not only San Antonio but also any doubt that they are, at this time of year, the best women's basketball team in the world.
You can see a photo galleries from the WNBA at the link above, at the Detroit Free Press (see article too) and through Flickr (slideshow).
There will be a Championship Celebration TODAY (Monday, October 6 2008) at Noon at Campus Martius Park in Detroit featuring the team, Head Coach Bill Laimbeer, assistant coaches and representatives from the City of Detroit and the State of Michigan including Mayor Kenneth Cockrell Jr.
