Game 4: Perfect Finish to Act 1!
The Tigers capped a spectacular American League Division Series with an 8-3 domination of the New York Yankees. Pitching again led the way as Jeremy Bonderman returned to early season form and silenced the powerful Yankee bats. The national media seems to still be paying as much attention to what the Yanks did wrong as what the Tigers did right, but folks are starting to wake up to the fact that for most of the season, the Tigers were the best team in baseball. The Freep has a story that takes you behind the scenes that I really enjoyed and Tom Gage of the News chronicles the celebration, which was incredible by all accounts.

Game 3: Kenny Rogers Gets the Yankees Off His Back
The New York Yankees had won the last seven decisions vs. Tiger pitcher Kenny Rogers who threw 7 2/3 shutout innings in masterful fashion en route to a 6-0 victory. I suppose we better let Kenny Rogers (via Mitch Albom) have his say too:
"Maybe it comes from failing so much. I'm not afraid to fail. I'm still here for a reason. I like the challenge. I know I'm fortysomething and don't have a lot of talent left ... but I do believe in myself."
Rogers overcoming his history was the story, and Kenny the Conquerer by Jeff Passan on Yahoo tells the story pretty well. One of the great treats of ESPN's coverage was them bringing legendary Tiger broadcaster Ernie Harwell into the booth for several innings.

Game 2: That's Why They Play all the Games
The Tigers got just enough offense to overcome Johnny Damon's 3-run homer while rookie fireballers Verlander and Zumaya were overpowering in a 4-3 Game 2 victory. Lynn Henning at the DetNews says that the Tigers Game 2 victory reminds the Tigers they belong. Mack Avenue Tigers says that he likes the Yankees ... because he hates the Yankees and also gives you a recap.
It's not really a game 2 specific story, but Jack Lessenberry took an interesting look at what the Tigers success means (and doesn't mean) to Detroit's economy.

Game 1: Start with a whimper, end with a ROAR?
The Tigers continued to struggle last night in game one against the New York Yankees. They always say a playoff series doesn't start until the home team loses a game, but in a best of five series, you have to start it pretty quick! The Detroit Tigers web site has a recap of the game and a video highlight reel. The Freep's Mike Rosenberg writes about the 8-4 Game 1 loss to the Yankees while Mitch Albom quotes Tiger skipper Jim Leyland as saying "You have to pitch aggressively, you have to go after them and you have to take your chances. I think if you try to tiptoe around them you're going to get beat." The Freep also has a nice photo gallery from the game that starts with a photo of Leyland & Joe Torre. ESPN hails Derek Jeter for a 5 at-bat, two single, two double and a home run game that tied the postseason record of five hits in a game held by five others.
Closer to home, Mack Avenue Tigers links to Nate Robertson's blog where he says "The Feet Are Wet" and shares his thoughts on the game. tigers did very well in the first 2 games in the series against new york!!!
You bet they did James! Winning one in New York was HUGE. Someone just pointed out to me that having to win 3 games from the Yankees is better than 4!

As a former Yankees fan (when I lived on the east coast) I just want to say, go Tigers!
The game Friday night was absolutely amazing, and Saturday it just kept getting better.
I felt kind of bad for the Yankees, boy are they in trouble with Steinbrenner.
I am hoping the Tigers do the same thing to the A's. I have never seen anything like that game on Friday night, that was something!
The Tigers really deserved to win, they were playing some great ball!
To Mr. Leyland and all the special Tiger team that we thouroughly enjoyed all summer long. We could hardly wait for game time to come on each day. Thank you all so much for giving us such fine entertainment. Wish we could have attended at least one game, but there is always next year. Had ring side seats in our Ownliving room just the same. Can't get much better than that. Could see perfectly for every game.
To us and many others, you will always be the number one team in the American League. We don't have a special tiger, you are all our "SPECIAL TIGERS" You were all quite amazing!! Enjoyed the announcers, also. You certainly have a very high class group of people helping your team.
