It's Earth Day ... pretty much all over the earth. The official Earth Day site is more or less overwhelmed, so we'll have to wander around to find out what's up.
Wikipedia says that the story goes that the first Earth Day was spearheaded by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson who - after seeing a major oil spill off Santa Barbara in 1969 - went back to Washington and passed a bill designating April 22 as a national day to celebrate the earth. 38 years later, more than half a billion people world wide participate in the event.
The Nature Conservancy has some good general information about things you can do every day, and also a map of their Michigan nature preserves.
Closer to home, in her radio address, Gov. Granholm says that Michigan on the cusp of a Green Industrial Revolution. She borrows a line from Wayne Gretzky, saying that if you want to win, skate not to where the puck is, but where it's going. The Grand Rapids Press looks at how West Michigan officials view Earth Day, the Detroit News has apparently decided that Earth Day is not news, and the Freep highlights a study finding that cutting greenhouse gases won't kill the economy.
The blogs are fairly quiet so far, but Blogging for Michigan has some cool video about Harvesting the Wind and mLive has an excellent Michigan Environmental Issues section with an April 2008 edition dedicated to Green issues in Michigan. The editor's note contends that Green is more than a phase:
It's tempting to attribute this wave of environmentalism to a renewed sense of responsibility and, of course, media hype. Yet as I traveled around the region chatting with farmers, business people, residents and kids, southern Michigan's environmental tendencies seem more natural than trendy.
Even before "green" became the buzzword of the decade, there were builders in Dexter, homeowners in Jackson and policy leaders in Ann Arbor fighting for the Earth's health.
Whatever you do today or feel about the idea of Earth Day, I do hope you can take a minute to appreciate this wonderful world we have been given for a short time and think about how you will handle your stewardship.
