Bioneers is a growing movement of everyday people committed to preserving and supporting the future through kinship, interdependence, cooperation, reciprocity, and community. There is a national keynote that will be broadcast at both venues!
Traverse City
The 5th Annual Great Lakes Bioneers Conference will be held October 20-22 at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City. Local keynote speakers will be ecologist Dave Jacke (about the challenges of creating edible landscapes), Angela Macke, nurse, horticulturist and founder of By the Light of Day (tea industry, trends in the Organic Fair Trade business, Chado) and writer, activist and farm worker Holly Wren Spaulding (fostering ideas and action for the long haul). Over 20 more workshops will address issues including childhood obesity, renewable energy in Michigan and creative waste stream reclaimation. Other highlights include a media center where you can create your own audio, video, and text-based media, an Earthwork Music Collective concert, a showing of the documentary Favela Rising followed by a dance party with Grand Rapid's latin rhythm band, Cabildo.

Great Lakes Bioneers Detroit will be held at Wayne State University October 20-22. The Friday Keynote is Water, Commons, or Commodity with David Dempsey, LaRon Williams, and Judy Piazza. A great slate of workshops include Mass Transit in SE Michigan (Marie Donigan and Transportation Riders United pres Bob Prudhomme), Turning the Rust Belt Green (John Hartig, Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge) and Investing in Green Energy (Tom Stanton of the Michigan Renewable Energy Program).
