Implications of Democrats' Victory for the Great Lakes

Crashing Wave - Grand Marais Light by James Phelps

In an excellent column, veteran Michigan political analyst George Weeks writes that much of the Michigan media's post-election focus has been on the "aging lions" US Representatives John Dingell & John Conyers and Senator Carl Levin. Weeks agrees that this is important, he goes beyond to ask some questions as to how the new makeup of the national legislature (and the Democratic House in Michigan) will affect the Great Lakes and efforts such as the proposed $20 billion Great Lakes restoration plan.

I really hope she gets stronger on environmental issues. One of the things we (as Dems) need to be better about is holding our elected officials accountable once we've elected them.

That Green Party thing is quite ironic, isn't it?

I think it is a definite need for BOTH parties to be better stewards of the environment. The Peter Annin book The Great Lakes Water Wars we profiled a while ago had some truly frightening implications for the Great Lakes. When you see corporations like GE, Ford, BP and others holding meetings on climate change, you start to see that maybe this isn't a Republican vs. Democrat issue.

I didn't mean to make it sound like I think she's solely responsible. Party affiliation shouldn't matter and, ultimately, it won't.

I keep meaning to get to that book.
