<description>: Michigan Green Consortium announces a free community-wide recycle, repurpose and reuse event from 10am until 2pm on Sunday, March 14, 2010 at Parking Lot B in downtown Traverse City. The event is held twice a year, the morning following the time adjustment, and serves as a reminder to residents to renew their pledge to do their part to preserve the environment.

The Daylight Savings Clean Up and Green Up Event will be hosted by the Consortium and a dozen or more local area businesses that provide recycle and reuse services. The event is comprehensive, offering residents the chance to bring recyclable items to one location and at no charge for collection. Steve Adcock, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Consortium states, “We’re fortunate to have been embraced by event partners that are willing to collect practically the entire spectrum of reusable household products”.

Thirteen or more area businesses will be on site that day to process a realm of household goods that have reusable or recyclable value. American Waste; Bay Area Recycling, Rifkin Steel, L &amp; B Recycling, Cartridge World, Goodwill, GT Profile’s Shredmonster, E Waste, Odom Reusable Building Products, Northern Michigan Garment Restoration, Evergreen Bottle Company, Team Elmer’s and Home Depot will be there. A Compact Fluorescent light bulb will be given away to the first 400 individuals that bring in items as incentive for local residents to turn out early, compliments of Home Depot. A reusable shopping bag will be offered to attendants compliments of recycling partner Goodwill Industries.

The list of items that will be accepted includes:- #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6 and #7 plastics; air conditioners; all coloured glass bottles; wine bottles, aluminum; auto batteries; nickel cadmium batteries; power tool batteries; alkaline batteries; BBQ grills; bubble wrap; cameras; cardboard; cell phones; computer monitors, computer printers, scanners and laptops; clean and reusable building products; asphalt; concrete, toilets; confidential documents; curling irons; dehumidifiers; drycleaner’s bags; extension cords; fire extinguishers, freezers; hair dryers; hot water heaters; lawn mowers and edgers; compact fluorescent and fluorescent light bulbs; magazines; metal products; microwave ovens; newspaper; stoves and ovens; Styrofoam packing peanuts; paper; plastic film; plastic grocery bags; plastic landscaping pots; plastic lawn edging; toner cartridges; ink cartridges; books; shoes; reading glasses and bifocals; electric radios; refrigerators; small electronics; small household electric appliances; styrofoam - #6 PS (clean white Styrofoam); styrofoam - expanded polystyrene (EPS); toaster ovens; typewriters; VHS tapes and cassettes; washing machines and dryers; and wire hangers.

There are only a handful of items that are prohibited. Clean Up and Green Up is not set up to accept obvious trash, television sets or television monitors, single-pane windows, insulation materials, fuels or hazardous chemicals. For questions about items accepted, a comprehensive list is available for download at www.mgconline.org.

The March 14th Clean Up and Green Up will be the second free recycling event hosted for the community by Michigan Green Consortium. During the inaugural event last November the Michigan Green Consortium was able to divert 11,100-lbs of steel scrap; 9,000-lbs of electronic equipment; 15 cubic yards (8,600-lbs) organic waste; 8,200-lbs confidential documents; 5,753-lbs. of sheet metal; 1,306-lbs of auto-batteries; 25 cubic yards of cardboard and paper stock; 12 cubic yards of plastics; 4 cubic yards of aluminum and metal; 3 cubic yards of glass; 20 cubic yards of Styrofoam; 4 cubic yards of plastic landscaping pots; 11 cubic yards of plastic bags and mixed plastic; 37 fire extinguishers; 100 ink cartridges; 200-lbs of clothing; 20-lbs of wire hangers; 76-lbs. of Freon; 55 fluorescent light bulbs; 50 compact fluorescent bulbs and 30 rechargeable
batteries from the landfill.

Michigan Green Consortium is a trade association established in 2008 to promote and support green and sustainable businesses; to educate the business and local community on what should be done to ensure a healthy environment and provides networking opportunities for green companies. The consortium is funded solely by member dues and public contributions.
