Today's Notable Book is Mackinac Bridge: A 50-Year Chronicle, 1957- 2007 by Mike Fornes (Cheboygan Tribune Printing Co.) honors the 50th anniversary of the Mighty Mac with details of day-to-day life on the bridge that united Michigan's two peninsulas and became a symbol of the Great Lakes State.
Combining exhaustive research and interviews, Fornes recounts tales of the routine (toll collections), the celebratory (the 100 millionth vehicle across the bridge) and the grim (traffic fatalities) with extensive photos and memorabilia complement these stories and provide a unique visual perspective.
We searched for a publisher's page on this book but couldn't find one. Fortunately, the Island Bookstore on Mackinac Island has the image and this book and many more available for sale on their Mackinac Bridge Books page.
Speaking of the Mighty Mac, in 2007 we ran a ton of features on the Mackinac Bridge on Absolute Michigan and Michigan in Pictures.
The Michigan Notable Books program annually selects 20 of the most notable books published in the year. The selections are reflective of Michigan's diverse ethnic, historical, literary, and cultural experience.
