Michigan Books: Sweety Pies: An Uncommon Collection of Womanish Observations, with Pie by Patty Pinner

Sweety Pies: An Uncommon Collection of Womanish Observations, with Pie by Patty PinnerSweety Pies: An Uncommon Collection of Womanish Observations, with Pie by Patty Pinner (Taunton Press) was written by a Saginaw native Patty Pinner who gathered 70 prized pie recipes from the women in her life.

What distinguishes this book is its utterly beguiling storytelling - each recipe is accompanied by a story told on the woman known for making the pie, from Sister Baby’s Buttermilk Pie to Miss Hatfield and Her Jelly Pies. It also filled with the truths handed down by our mothers (or that we wish had been handed down by our mothers) like: "An unhappy husband will ask for toasted snow" and "You don't want a man who is jealous of nothing or everything." This is a cookbook that's about love, life, family, friendship, and community as much as it is about the recipes.

You can read an interview with Patty Pinner from the Metro Times and get a tasty recipe for Caramel Tin Roof Pie (along with the story) from I Love Desserts.

This is a FANTASTIC book. I just checked it out at the library two days ago and have nearly finished reading it. My Mom, Mother-in-law and I are ALL buying ourselves a copy of this must-have for women of all ages. The pie recipe selections are filled with variety, and there truly isn't a single one I wouldn't want to try. This one is going on my coffee table for sure! I just wish I had the wealth of advice Miss Pinner had all through her life, though with this book, I can glean the wisdom from generations from her family and share it with my daughter as she grows. I'm buying one for my daughter when she is older...
    GO BUY THIS BOOK!!!
KH... a new fan who is waiting for Patty Pinner to publish a home-cooking-main-meal kind of cookbook, and then I'll be set!

I absolutely LOVE Patty Pinner's cookbooks. The recipes are simple
and classic. But what I love most are the wise little stories that
accompany each recipe. This is a cookbook-memoir like no other,I think
EVERY woman ought to have one in her collection. Trust me, nobody can give out a recipe in the womanly way that Patty Pinner can. This book is great for gifting --from mother to daughter, sister to sister, girlfriend to girlfried. Patty Pinner is taking recipes in a whole new "womanish" direction.
