The three debates are in the books, they've generated a lot of discussion (though maybe no real answers). We thought we'd give you links to a few sites that analyzed last night's third and final Gubernatorial Debate and then let you sound off.
- Absolute Michigan's Granholm vs. DeVos: 2006 Michigan Governor Debates (recap of the three debates, links to video archive of each debate, lots and lots of comments)
- Granholm, DeVos duel over economy (LSJ)
- Truths behind the debate claims (Freep) Granholm: DeVos is "investing in the voucher movement in seven other states" and said he planned to pursue vouchers in Michigan again after voters defeated them in 2000. Also see What the voters said.
- Highlights from Michigan's 3rd gubernatorial debate (Detroit News) DeVos: "Forty-nine other states all operate under the same trade agreements. ... They've been adding jobs." Also check out The Debate: How the Pros rate it.
- How about some blogs? Try the Michigan Conservative Dossier (DeVos), Liberal, Loud & Proud (Granholm), MI GOP Blog (DeVos), Michigan Liberal (Granholm) ... anyone see a pattern here?

Your Turn: Who Won?
We are asking you to post ONE POST with ONLY the following:

I think that Granholm won the first debate, Devos won the second debate and they where about even in the third debate. Granholm is a trial lawyer and is more eloquent with her words but I am not voting for a great speaker. I think the biggest question I still have is for the Governor: Do you take any of the blame for the state of our economy, you have had four years and we are still last in the country in unemployment, you promised to change that four years ago and havent, why? As far as changing my mind? No, we didnt get the results we where promised four years ago and four more years of Granholm wont fix our problems. I am voting for Devos and encourage everyone to do the same.
To asnwer your questions, first, I think that Granholm won all three debates on both style and substance, as she acknowledged that Michigan has problems, but unlike DeVos, she has laid out specifics plans and continues to work hard to improve Michigan's economic climate. Second, my number one unanswered question is why Dick DeVos wants to be governor and, if elected, what he actually plans to do to improve Michigan . Three debates later and I have heard precious little substance from him. And third, no, the debates did not change my mind but did serve to reconfirm what I already knew: DeVos has no plan for our state.
I too wonder why DeVos wants to be governor. I think he probably got screwed out of earning money by some current law and now he wants revenge and wants the power to make changes necessary to make more money. I don't believe for a second that he wants to do better for the people in Michigan. He is so disconnected from the average citizen of Michigan.
1)Granholm swept all three debates, hands down.
2)What exactly is Dick going to do if by his words he's only going to replace half the of nearly $3Billion SBT and Personal Property Tax that he wants to eliminate? He says Michigan has no money, but he's going to take away $3 BILLION from the state's general operating budget? I'm so confused - how is that possibly helping Michigan? All of his other plans are so secret, how can the man expect the people of Michigan to trust him? We're not stupid as he'd like us to believe.
3)If the debates did anything, they only reinforced how dangerous Amway Guy is for Michigan. Vote Granholm!
You people are lunatics. Michigan sucks under Granholm. VOTE DEVOS IF YOU WANT TO SEE MICHIGAN SURVIVE!!
The debates didn't change my mind and I have no idea who really won. I will say that this thread and the much larger thread on the debates seem to indicate that the loser of the debates (and maybe our modern political process) has been the middle ground.
I am wondering from DeVos where the money for tax cuts will come from (specifics please, because as a school board member, I will have to make specific cuts if the budget crashes) and from Granholm how she expects to get buy-in from the legislature in term 2.
I think Granholm was well spoken and DeVos stumbled a lot. I don't really want to vote for either one of them!
I guess I would have to say Granholm won with most of the people in MI, to me, nobody won, and the biggest loosers of all are Michiganders.
I think Granholm will get re-elected, so I hope she does a good job. God help us all!
In the last three debates, Granholm showed why she will be re-elected. Not only did she pin point DeVos's background, with Amway she also showed how DeVos has no answer for Michigan on any topic. this is all we says and will say, "I am disappointed, and Michigan is in need for change" This is for DeVos, if you want to win this election, or any election, have a plan, a plan for anything, other than pointing the finger, and its funny because you are the source of many problems we face today. I know that Graholm will be re-elected but what really scares me is that people buy what DeVos says, he doesn’t give a damn about Michigan, he wants the power, and he wants the end of the democratic rise. DeVos, your 15 minutes are up, Jennifer Granholm is our Governor.
andrew is completely right... DeVos is just hurting this state, GO JENNIE!
Amen farlane. I feel dirty and wrong for having contributed to it even if it was just to find a link to the 3rd debate.
I’m just curious what people think.
Devos has said that he would eliminate two taxes that businesses are currently paying – SBT and private property. Devos has recently conceded that the Michigan Budget cannot afford any large cuts.
Analysts estimate that the elimination of both taxes will leave more than a 3 billion dollar deficit in the budget. Devos has said that there will be an ‘alternative’ tax but he wont say what it is. My question for people is how will devos replace 3 billion dollars without charging businesses?
Will a devos administration (with the help of a republican majority legislature):
A) Increase the sales tax
B) Increase your income tax
C) Increase your license fees (drivers, fishing, boating, etc)
D) Increase deficit spending
I am voting for Granholm. I don't think DeVos can even compare to what she has done for the state. It is not fair to blame the failing auto industry on her. If anything, the blame should be on the UAW... DeVos has NO plan. His healthcare plan is to "get a job"... I have a job, I still don't have affordable healthcare... How could anyone expect a stellar first term with the trash Engler left? (no pun intended) DeVos wants to eliminate the small business tax, make michigan into a minimum wage state (bye bye new %7.00 an hour minimum wage) and not work out a plan for healthcare. Sounds to me that DeVos is exactly what he says, a business man. He does not want to be govorner to FIX our state. He wants to become govorner so things benefit him and other republicans. Business first, people second. Money matters more to DeVos than humanity.
oh and by the way, I would rather have Canada dump their trash here than not have that business relationship. Many people do not know that Canada will take all of our Medical and Hazardous waste. I'd rather have trash that can decompose than toxins seeping into my soil.
Granholms economic idea.... a Culture change? Everyone with Master degrees?
Why dont we all become Lawyers? Why dont we have Schools that teach how to Talk, Walk, Dress,
and become politicaly correct??
There is no leadership even if you could put the two together.. one is a Lawyer and the Other is a side stepping Executive.
Maybe what we need to start seeing is real working Men and Women into these offices?
Not afraid to talk or doesnt sound like some Lawyer prepped them for speaking..
Lets Hear from the HEART!
Granholm is just another blood sucking lawyer. (Good to see that the USA stil leads the world in something.) Perhaps if she'd started and grown a business, or had to meet a payroll, Granholm would have more empathy for the people that create the wealth and the high standard of living in this country. The private sector.
Who won/lost? The hard working taxpayers and the businesses that employ them.
my 8 year old son even knows crappy
when he sees it. He sees Dick DeVos
on television and says, Hey mom that
crappy guy is on again.
Michigan sucks. I don't care who you vote in, the unions are going to conquer all anyway. Why don't you yankees do something about that first. Oh, I forgot the unions are GOD up here. And besides, when I vote in the United States of America I tend to vote for the American born folks. So the only choice here is Dick DeVos. And when we get rid of that Canadian trash, then maybe she can take her Canadian trash with her. When she debated with DeVos did you notice she has Bill Clinton syndrome? Don't know what that is? That's where all that lawyer education comes in and helps you speak alot of words but don't actually say a damn thing. Maybe that's
why Bush won both times. Because he speaks to you as a person and not as a lawyer. Of course, I work for a living "unlike the unioneers" so I like to have someone speak normal like a person with a heartbeat.
Well, I think that when it is all said and done, none of the politicians care about me as a person. I wouldn't be afraid to see DeVos as governor BUT I am scared out of my mind that Granholm will be re-elected. Under her leadership, my husband and I have both lost our jobs and were forced to file bankruptcy. We lost everything we worked for including our house. We have nothing to lose now and I am afraid that I won't even have money to feed my 3 kids if she is re-elected. I don't understand how people want to vote for her. She is dangerous. We all know that if we get behind on our bills and it takes us 6 months to get "in the hole" it will take us at least 1 year to pull out of it. So, why did she try to un-do Engler's 8 years in only 4 years. It hurt all of us very bad. If you don't think so, ask the students in the Grand Rapids public schools who have to ride the city bus because the budget was cut so bad that they don't have any busses anymore. Maybe you should ask the firefighters and police officers whose jobs are all a little more dangerous because funding for them was cut and staff was reduced. I think this state is crazy for thinking we can survive another four years of her. Maybe all of you that want to vote for her are just afraid of welfare drug testing....or time limits!!! Maybe with DeVos there will at least be jobs here again. If you don't want to work, please go to another state and leave Michigan alone.
JENNIE WON HANDS DOWN and u ppl who say michigan stinks @$#^%& you
To quote David Crockett:
"You can go to hell -- I'm going to Texas."
