About this photo, Larry the Biker writes "Linus may have found his spot in Bruce Township, Michigan. A farmer told me once that Macomb County, Michigan is one of the largest producers of pumpkins in the United States."
I couldn't find confirmation on that fact, but I did find a some pumpkin & fall harvest information from the Michigan Department of Agriculture. They tell you where to get your Jack-o-lantern and offer some pumpkin and fall themed recipes* including a Pumpkin Upside Down Cake.
Unlike last year's big crop, reports say that Michigan's pumpkin crop could be down by as much as 50% in 2007 due to hot weather and drought up north and too much rain in southern Michigan.
Taste the Local Difference has more recipes including Potage au Potiron (served in the pumpkin shell) and some information about pumpkins including the fact that people first made jack-o-lanterns out of potatoes and turnips.
About all we can say for sure at this point is that it's a good bet that the Michigan Brewing Company's Screamin' Pumpkin Spiced Ale would be a good choice for your Halloween party and that (as usual) "Pumpkin Ed" Moody will be carving up some amazing pumpkins up in Frankfort. Ed is a big part of the Frankfort Fall Festival, which also features pumpkin chucking catapaults. Much more pumpkiny goodness at Absolute Michigan keyword pumpkin!
*The Smokey Chipotle Cheddar Stuffed Pig-Skin Potatoes has no pumpkins, but it did simultaneously alert all cardiologists in the 5 county area and made me wonder "is it lunchtime yet?"
