Michigan’s Famous Landmarks

My town's Famous Landmark by Kathy

Kathy says that this is what Ann Arbor is famous for: Michigan Stadium aka The Big House, the largest (American) football stadium in the world and the University it serves.

That got me wondering, what landmark is YOUR Michigan town or city famous for? Post your comments (and links to photos & information) below.

I live in Leland, which some people actually call Fishtown. The Fishtown Preservation Society says:

Fishtown is a collection of weathered fishing shanties, smokehouses, overhanging docks, fish tugs and charter boats along the Leland River in Leland, Michigan. Once the heart of a commercial fishing village, the structures and docks are real places where people can walk through, see and feel a connection to Lake Michigan’s fishing heritage.

    Here's some photos of Fishtown.

Not a comment, but a question. You've probably gotten it before:

Where can I find out about the US flag seen at mile 165 on the west side of 1-75? I've scoured the internet with no luck. I've wondered about it for years.

That famous flag is just before the Wilder Road exit by Bay City, Michigan off of I-75. It is a brick flag that appears to be waving (it used to be lit up--unsure if it still is). It's kind of overgrown now, but it's still there.

If you're headed north, it will be on your left, headed south, on your right. Don't blink, or you'll miss it.

I've also wondered about the brick American Flag on I-75. I tried to get Erik Smith, formerly from WXYZ Detroit TV to cover it in his "From the Heart" series. Does anyone know the history of it?
