The 75 year-old S. S. City of Milwaukee is a Michigan National Historic Landmark that is permanently moored and open to the public May - September as a car ferry museum. It's a fascinating walk-through for all ages that really gives you a sense of the importance of the railroad car ferries and feeling for what it was like to travel and work aboard them.
The State of Michigan's S. S. City of Milwaukee page lists the historical significance statement that begins:
The Great Lakes Train Ferry S. S. City of Milwaukee is a steel-hulled vessel with a steel superstructure. A dominant feature is the large four-track enclosed car deck which will hold 22 modern-size freight cars. The City of Milwaukee was built in 1931 by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company at Manitowoc, Wisconsin. She is a steam, twin screw propelled train ferry.
On weekends in October, the ship is transformed into a Ghost Ship. They are currently seeking volunteer actors, tinkerers, electronics hobbyists and carpenters. Just email ghostship@carferry.com.
