Welcome to the Week for August 25 - 31. Heading into Labor Day weekend there is plenty to do around the state including the Michigan State Fair in Detoit which runs through September 1 and is the nation's oldest state fair. The Michigan Renaissance Festival in Holly is held through September 28 on weekends and Labor Day, rain or shine. The Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix in Detroit, August 29 - 31, features the American Le Mans Series, the IndyCar Series and, new for '08, the SCCA SPEED World Challenge GT Championship. The Detroit International Jazz Fest in Detroit, August 29 - September 1, features six stages over four days, with blues, gospel, R&B, and one of the finest jazz lineups on the planet. The Arts, Beats & Eats in Pontiac, August 29 - September 1, offers more than 200 performances on eight stages, the top ranked HealthPlus Juried Fine Arts Show, local restaurants with some of the finest cuisine in metro Detroit and international, regional and local features that will continue to make the city of Pontiac the premier family destination for Labor Day weekend.

    bootstrap analysis has a post titled pesticides, bees, and history's lessons be damned that is well worth a read. It's mostly a review of the book American Pests: The Losing War on Insects from Colonial Times to DDT and she says:

    ...It was both enlightening and depressing to read colonial accounts of invasive species, problems with monocultures, and careless application of dangerous chemicals that -- save for the dates and the compounds involved -- could be drawn from today's news. Every other page will have you asking yourself, "Why are we still doing these same stupid things???"

    Ban on deer baiting stings for local growers, sellers

    For the state’s mom-and-pop farm markets, party stores and gas stations that leap into the deer-bait business every fall, Tuesday’s emergency order by the state Department of Natural Resources banning all baiting in the Lower Peninsula could be a fatal shot.

    “It stung me when I heard the news on the radio this morning,” said Andy Todosciuk, owner of Andy T’s in St. Johns. “In November, half our income comes from deer feed. This is one more way for the state to screw us over.”

    But the loss of sales in sugar beets, field corn, carrots and apples, said Department of Natural Resources spokeswoman Mary Dettloff, is small potatoes compared to what would happen if chronic wasting disease gets a grip on the state’s deer herd.

    “That,” Dettloff said, “would be even more devastating.”
