Say hello to August and the dog days of summer! Our Michigan August Event Calendar is loaded with great opportunities to explore the Great Lakes State. The PGA Championship is in Bloomfield Township August 4 - 10. Celebrate the blueberry industry in and around South Haven at the National Blueberry Festival August 7 - 10. Crystal Falls is "Home of the Humungous Fungus" and the annual festival is August 7 - 10. Not to be missed is the Great Lakes Folk Festival in East Lansing August 8 - 10. The festival is a FREE, unique fusion of arts fair, music festival, county fair, multi-ethnic festival, hands-on activity workshops and celebration of cultural heritage. The St. Johns Mint Festival runs from August 8 - 10 and the Northport Wine and Food Festival & Dog Parade happens on August 9th.

Last but not least, preseason football kicks off this week with the Lions taking on The New York Giants, Thursday August 7th at Ford Field. Game time is 7PM and you can purchase tickets online.

    Great Lakes rising again; levels close to normal - The Detroit Free Press

    After a parched summer last year that left docks stranded and boat propellers scraping sandy shallows, the Great Lakes are blissfully -- and surprisingly -- full again this year.

    Heavy snow and rains since last winter have made the lakes rise. Scientists aren't sure whether this will last, but they're hopeful. The temperatures, moisture and ice cover next winter will be critical

    Red means stop. Got that? from the Detroit Free Press

    I can let this pass without reminding everyone that it’s National Stop on Red Week this week.

    Yes, we have a week dedicated to this, because we are idiots.

    Running red lights caused at least 4,077 crashes in southeast Michigan last year, 12 of which resulted deaths. Even if we factor in that those numbers represent 200 fewer such crashes than in 2006, and five fewer fatalities, we still are running reds way too regularly.
