"Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt." -Measure for Measure

Hundreds of years later, Shakespeare still has wisdom aplenty to share. You can pick up some of that, along with a healthy dose of entertainment at the The Michigan Shakespeare Festival in Jackson. It starts Tuesday (Jul 15) and continues through August 3rd.

There's a whole slew of other events in our July Michigan Event Calendar for this weekend including the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair, the Venetian Festival in St. Joseph, the Great Lakes Sea Kayak Symposium in Grand Marais, Concert of Colors in Detroit, Michigan Storytellers Festival in Flint, the Hiawatha Music Festival in Marquette, Waterford's Quake on the Lake boat race, the Ragtime Street Fair in Dearborn and the Great Lakes Irish Music Festival at Comstock Park in Grand Rapids.

The photo above is from the early stage of last weekend's Port Huron to Mackinac sailing race. I'm told it was one of the faster ones on record - the bigger boats were actually moving faster than the Coast Guard Cutter that was going to mark their midway times - and that one boat made just two jibes! Hope the wind is at your back this week and as always, post your comments & observations below!

Stem-cell spin by Jack Lessenberry of the Metro Times

There's a lot of nonsense being spread about stem cells, and you are about to hear a whole lot more. Last week, it became likely that Michigan voters will decide in November whether to get rid of our present policy banning most embryonic stem cell research.

That's because those in favor of such research, who are loosely organized as a group called CureMichigan, turned in what looks like far more signatures than needed to get on the state ballot this fall.

Scientists: $200M loss from Great Lakes invasives via woodtv.com

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- A scientific report says invasive species that reached the Great Lakes in ballast tanks of oceangoing ships may cost the regional economy about $200 million a year.

The study, released Wednesday, says 57 of the 84 invasives that became established in the lakes after the St. Lawrence Seaway opened in 1959 were transported in ballast water. Among them are zebra and quagga mussels, the Eurasian ruffe (pronounced rough) and round goby.

New law makes waves for young boaters, jet-skiers from The Grand Rapids Press at mlive.com

GRAND HAVEN -- Jacob Vanderlee wants to drive his family's jet boat by himself.

At 12, the Fruitport boy thought he was just two years away from being able to take the wheel alone.

But a bill signed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm last week known as Ashleigh Iserman's Law, will raise the minimum age to operate a boat or jet ski without supervision from age 14 to 16.
