The air in hundreds of U.S. counties is simply too dirty to breathe, the government said Wednesday, ordering a multibillion-dollar expansion of efforts to clean up smog in cities and towns nationwide.

In Michigan, counties that currently do not meet EPA's new health standard for smog include: Allegan, Benzie, Berrien, Cass, Genesee, Kent, Lenawee, Macomb, Mason, Muskegon, Ottawa, Schoolcraft, St. Clair, Washtenaw.

The Lansing-based acoustic quartet Steppin' In It is as comfortable playing country and folk as it is playing blues, bluegrass or swing. These versatile musicians, led by guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Joshua Davis, backed up Chelsea multi-hyphenate Jeff Daniels at his '06 and '07 Thanksgiving weekend concerts at Ann Arbor's Michigan Theater. They've also been plenty busy the last few years with club dates and music festivals. Steppin' In It's current lineup has been together five years and also includes Dominic Suchyta on upright bass; Andy Wilson on harmonica, accordion, trumpet and whistles; and his brother Joe Wilson on dobro, steel guitar and trombone. "Simple Tunes for Troubled Times" is the band's first release of new material in close to four years, and a dual CD-release party with singer-songwriter Rachael Davis takes place March 20 at the Ark. Josh Davis answered some questions on his way back home to Lansing after a recent show in Chicago.

St. Patrick's Parade Corktown Races will celebrate 26 years of great fun and running at noon Sunday.

The event is the largest winter race in Michigan, with more than 2,000 participants expected for the four-mile run and 1.5-mile walk. The 50th annual St. Patrick's Parade follows.

The course starts on Michigan Avenue in front of Tiger Stadium, loops around Campus Martius and heads north in front of Comerica Park and the Fox Theatre. It returns the same way, coming back along the parade route, but heads past the reviewing stand in front of the Gaelic League and finishes in Roosevelt Park by the old Michigan Central train station. DJ Mark Cotter will be back spinning Irish tunes at the finish-line tent.

There was a dark side to Andy Warhol, whose colorful images of famous people and everyday objects made him one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century.

Even before a woman shot and nearly killed him at his studio in 1968, Warhol was fascinated by violent death. It motivated him to create some of his most disturbing works, a number of which will be presented in a three-month exhibition of more than 100 of his prints and paintings to open March 14 at the Grand Rapids Art Museum.

Storm Team 8 has been looking through a lot of data that shows the potential for some big storms this spring for West Michigan.

After the snowiest February and one of the snowiest winters we have ever had in the area, most of us are not thinking about springtime severe weather.

But climate records show the weather pattern we are in now is eerily similar to the pattern that we had before some of West Michigan's worst tornado outbreaks.

24 Hour News 8 will host a live, statewide town hall meeting with Governor Jennifer Granholm on March 19.

The one-hour program, co-hosted by 24 Hour News 8 Political Reporter Rick Albin and WDIVs Devin Scillian, will focus on Michigan's economic future.

It will begin at 8 p.m. and will be seen across the state on NBC affiliates.

Finally some good news for the Great Lakes...

The melt from one of the snowiest winters in years around the Great Lakes is expected to boost water levels in the upper lakes, which had hit or approached record lows last fall, by as much as a foot this summer, bringing joy to boaters and lakeside businesses.

"We didn't expect this dramatic turnaround," said Scott Thieme, chief hydrologist of the Detroit office of the Army Corps of Engineers. "It's a much better picture than it was six months ago. ...We're just amazed at the weather we've had."

A new line of stamps set for release later this year features 10 Great Lakes dunes stamps, each one depicting different animals, insects and vegetation found at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, west of Traverse City. The stamps are the 10th installment in the U.S. Postal Service's Nature of America educational series.
