109 Fifth Street
Miskwabik Building

The historic three story building at 109 and 111 Fifth Street housed many businesses over the years including Calumet Hardware, Copper Arts and Re-Run Sports of late. Now it is the home of MISKWABIK ED GRAY GALLERY, STUDIO and MISKWABIK PRESS. The buildings’ three story architecture stands out in the historic 100 block of Fifth Street, in the heart of downtown Calumet.

The walk-up Artist Studio/Apartment is on the second floor. It has two large rooms plus a kitchen and bath. The studio and living space is rentable for one, two and three week periods. The rent for the studio and apartment is $250.00 per week for one person. There is an extra charge for additional people. The facility is also available for studio rent only. The price for studio only use is $100.00 per week. We are a completely smoke free facility.

The Conglomerate Café, Evergreen Restaurant, Copper World, Calumet Mercantile, and the Copper Country Associated Artists Gallery are all within the same block. With many more stores, artist studios, galleries and restaurants also within close walking distance. Calumet is in the heart of the Keweenaw and the home of the Calumet Theatre.

ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE program is keyed to the artist in any media who wishes to visit the Keweenaw and have a studio during their time here. They will be able to work, take advantage of events, and mentor with the artists in the area as they wish, keeping their studio as a base for their stay and still be able to take in the beauty of the Keweenaw with all its art, history, culture and scenic shore line.

High speed internet access is available throughout the building. The studio space is limited, make your plans early. Sign-up is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Call or write for more information on your requirements. The studio can be rented for one, two, or three weeks. Payment is required to be paid in full in advance to hold the studio/apartment for you. Sorry, there are no refunds.

First Fridays in Calumet

The merchants, gallery owners and restaurateurs in the 100 block of Fifth Street in Calumet have put in place an event to bring the block together in a mutual endeavor to promote their businesses to the community. On the first Friday of each month, from 6:30pm –9:00pm, there are special events planned such as gallery openings, demonstrations, restaurant specials and more.

We extend an invitation to all business owners throughout Calumet to join us and make "First Fridays in Calumet" a community wide event. We encourage all merchants to help build and strengthen Calumet. We have become a destination for tourism in all realms, from art and antique collectors to travelers wishing to experience the beauty of the Keeweenaw.

We envision "First Fridays in Calumet" to become an exciting event for our local residents as well as visiting guests. Imagine them enjoying street music, poetry readings, with many of them meandering from store to store and stopping to partake in the fine food and spirits of Calumet.

If you wish to learn more about "First Fridays in Calumet", please contact Ed Gray at the Ed Gray Gallery, 109 Fifth Street. 1-906-281-3494

The city and a Swedish company plan to turn the city's human waste stream into fuel for powering vehicles or generating electricity.
In the process, they say the partnership -- expected to be spelled out in further detail today at a City Hall news conference -- could make Flint a national leader in the biogas industry.

The news comes as other fuel costs soar and worries over fossil fuels linger.
